Day 1: Perth to Paradise
Depart Perth on Virgin Australia’s weekly flight to the Cocos Keeling Islands (4.5 hours). Cross the vast Indian Ocean to this remote Australian territory. Arrive at West Island — the administrative center with a population of about 150. Collect your rental car (included). Check into The Breakers Cocos. Afternoon orientation drive around West Island — you’ll circle it in 20 minutes. Evening sunset at Trannies Beach. Welcome dinner featuring fresh-caught fish.
Day 2: Direction Island — The Signature Beach
Ferry to Direction Island — regularly voted one of Australia’s best beaches and home to the famous “Rip” — a natural current that drifts snorkelers through a channel filled with spectacular coral and tropical fish. Spend the morning drifting through this underwater aquarium. Beach picnic lunch under coconut palms. Afternoon: explore the island on foot — you’ll likely be sharing it with just a handful of other visitors. Ferry back to West Island.
Day 3: Home Island — Cocos Malay Culture
Ferry to Home Island — the cultural heart of the Cocos Keeling Islands, home to about 450 Cocos Malays. Visit the Home Island Museum to learn the fascinating history of the Clunies-Ross family who ruled the islands as a private fiefdom for 150 years. Walk the grounds of Oceania House — the former Clunies-Ross mansion. Visit the local mosque and kampong (village). Enjoy a traditional Cocos Malay lunch with a local family. Afternoon return to West Island.
Day 4: Motorized Canoe Island-Hopping Safari
Full-day motorized canoe safari through the southern atoll — the signature Cocos experience. Your local guide navigates through the turquoise lagoon, hopping between uninhabited islands. Snorkel at secret spots inaccessible by ferry. Walk on pristine beaches where the only footprints are your own. Beach barbecue lunch on a deserted island. This is the Cocos Keeling Islands at their most magical — complete isolation in tropical perfection.
Day 5: Lagoon Turtle Tour & Snorkeling
Morning turtle tour — the Cocos lagoon is home to resident green and hawksbill turtles. Snorkel alongside these gentle creatures in their natural habitat. Afternoon: explore more of West Island — visit the Big Barge art gallery, the local community center, and the Cocos Islands Golf Club (the world’s most remote golf course with an international airport runway hazard!).
Day 6: Underwater Scooter Adventure
Try the underwater scooter tour — the easiest way to explore the lagoon’s coral gardens. These handheld battery-powered scooters pull you effortlessly through the water, covering more reef than possible by swimming alone. Discover coral bommies, schools of tropical fish, and the occasional reef shark. Afternoon at leisure — perhaps another ferry to Direction Island or a drive around West Island to your own private beach.
Day 7: Free Day — Your Paradise, Your Pace
Your last full day. Revisit your favorite spots — another drift snorkel through the Rip, a final canoe safari, or simply relax on a deserted beach with a book. Evening farewell dinner at a West Island restaurant — the fresh seafood here is exceptional.
Day 8: Departure
Final morning swim. Return rental car. Transfer to West Island Airport. Depart on the weekly Virgin Australia flight back to Perth, carrying memories of Australia’s most remote and pristine tropical paradise.
