Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Edinburgh — The 18th Century Alive
Arrive Edinburgh, a city where history hangs in the air. Afternoon walking tour of the Royal Mile: the closes (alleyways), courtyards, and hidden gardens that inspired the Outlander novels and look much as they did in the 18th century. Visit Gladstone’s Land (1617), a perfectly preserved merchant’s tenement, and the Writers’ Museum celebrating Scotland’s literary titans — Burns, Scott, and Stevenson. Welcome dinner at the Witchery by the Castle, one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric restaurants.
Day 2: Edinburgh Castle & Culross Village
Morning: Edinburgh Castle — explore the Great Hall, the 12th-century St Margaret’s Chapel, and Mons Meg, the giant 15th-century bombard cannon. Afternoon: Culross, an impossibly well-preserved 16th-17th century village on the Firth of Forth. This is Cranesmuir in Outlander — the cobbled Mercat Cross where Geillis Duncan was accused of witchcraft, and the ochre-colored Culross Palace. The village feels like a film set because it essentially is — the National Trust for Scotland has preserved it so carefully that you can walk the same stones Claire walked. Return to Edinburgh. Overnight in Edinburgh.
Day 3: Stirling & Doune Castle (Castle Leoch)
Morning: Doune Castle, the primary filming location for Castle Leoch (seat of Clan MacKenzie) in Outlander, and also Winterfell in Game of Thrones and Camelot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The audio guide narrated by Monty Python’s Terry Jones is legendary. Afternoon: Stirling Castle, the great Renaissance palace of the Stewart kings. The Royal Palace has been restored to its 1540s glory — colorful tapestries, painted ceilings, and costumed interpreters. The Unicorn Tapestries (woven in a dedicated studio on-site over 13 years) are a modern recreation of the “Hunt of the Unicorn” series now in New York’s Met Cloisters. Overnight near Pitlochry.
Day 4: Blair Castle & Culloden Battlefield
Morning: Blair Castle, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Atholl, dating to 1269 — its white harled facade is one of the most recognizable castles in Scotland. The Atholl Highlanders are Europe’s only legal private army, a privilege granted by Queen Victoria in 1844. Afternoon: Culloden Battlefield, where on April 16, 1746, the Jacobite rising ended in defeat — in less than an hour, 1,500 Jacobites were killed by government forces. The battlefield is preserved as it was, with clan graves marked by weathered stones. The visitor center’s immersive 360-degree battle experience is profoundly moving. Overnight in Inverness.
Day 5: Clava Cairns & Loch Ness into the Great Glen
Morning: Clava Cairns, a 4,000-year-old Bronze Age cemetery of stone circles and passage graves — the inspiration for Craigh na Dun in Outlander (though the fictional standing stones were a prop). The alignment with the winter solstice suggests sophisticated astronomical knowledge. Afternoon: follow the Great Glen south. Visit Fort Augustus and the Caledonian Canal locks. Stop at the Falls of Foyers, a 50m waterfall plunging into a wooded gorge above Loch Ness. Overnight in Fort William.
Day 6: Glenfinnan & Jacobite Steam Train
Morning: ride the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig — the “Hogwarts Express” crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct. This 84-mile round trip through some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery is consistently voted one of the world’s greatest railway journeys. The train crosses the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct (Harry Potter’s route to Hogwarts), passes Loch Eilt (Dumbledore’s grave), and skirts the white sands of Morar. Afternoon: visit Glenfinnan Monument and the visitor center — this is where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed in 1745 and raised his standard, launching the last Jacobite rebellion. Return to Fort William. Farewell dinner with a full whisky tasting.
Day 7: Return to Edinburgh & Depart
Morning drive through Rannoch Moor, a 50-square-mile expanse of peat bog, lochans, and heather that is one of Europe’s last great wildernesses — utterly desolate and beautiful. Stop at the Glen Coe viewpoint for one last Highland panorama. Arrive Edinburgh airport or city center by afternoon.
