Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Luxembourg City — The Gibraltar of the North
Land at Luxembourg Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon walking tour of Luxembourg City’s Old Quarter (UNESCO World Heritage). Built on dramatic gorges and fortified cliffs, Luxembourg was once one of Europe’s most impregnable fortresses — the “Gibraltar of the North.” Visit the Bock Casemates — a 23km network of underground tunnels carved into solid rock, used as bomb shelters in WWII. Walk the Chemin de la Corniche, called “Europe’s most beautiful balcony,” with panoramic views over the Alzette valley and the Grund district. Visit the Notre-Dame Cathedral (17th century) and the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke. Evening: dinner in the Grund district, Luxembourg City’s most charming quarter with its riverside cafés. Overnight in Luxembourg City.
Day 2: Vianden Castle — Europe’s Most Beautiful Castle
Day trip to Vianden, one of Europe’s most spectacular castle towns. Vianden Castle (11th-14th century) is a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, perched dramatically on a hilltop above the Our River valley. Restored to its medieval glory, the castle features the Knights’ Hall, Byzantine Gallery, and a fascinating museum. Victor Hugo lived in Vianden in 1871 as a political exile — visit the Victor Hugo House museum where he wrote part of “L’Année Terrible.” Ride the chairlift for panoramic views over the Our Valley. Walk through the medieval town’s cobbled streets and cross the arched stone bridge. Overnight in Luxembourg City.
Day 3: Mullerthal — Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland
Full day in the Mullerthal region, known as “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland” for its extraordinary rock formations, dense forests, and crystal-clear streams. Hike the Mullerthal Trail (awarded “Leading Quality Trail — Best of Europe” certification) through a fairytale landscape of moss-covered boulders, sandstone gorges, waterfalls, and ancient beech forests. Visit the Schiessentümpel waterfall — an iconic three-spout waterfall cascading over a stone bridge. Explore the Huel Lee (Hollow Rock) and the labyrinth of rocks at Berdorf. Picnic lunch among the giant boulders. Afternoon: visit Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town (founded 698 AD by St. Willibrord), with its magnificent basilica and Benedictine abbey. Day 4: Moselle Valley — Wine, Villages & Roman History
Drive along the Moselle River, forming Luxembourg’s southeastern border with Germany. The Moselle Valley produces some of Europe’s finest white wines: crisp Rieslings, elegant Pinot Gris, and Luxembourg’s signature sparkling Crémant de Luxembourg (produced using the Champagne method since 1991). Visit family-owned wineries in Wormeldange and Remich for tastings. Stop at the Gallo-Roman villa in Echternach, a remarkably preserved 4th-century Roman mansion with intact mosaic floors. Afternoon: explore the charming wine villages of Ahn and Grevenmacher. Boat cruise on the Moselle. Farewell dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant — Luxembourg has one of the world’s highest densities of Michelin stars per capita! Overnight in Luxembourg City.
Day 5: Depart
Morning at leisure — last stroll through the upper town, visit the Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) designed by I.M. Pei, or shop on the Grand Rue. Airport transfer. Äddi, Lëtzebuerg!
