Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Granada to Ometepe Island – Arrival & Sunset Views
Morning: Transfer from Granada or Managua to the port town of San Jorge (Rivas). Board the ferry for a scenic 1-hour crossing of Lake Nicaragua — Central America’s largest lake, also known as Cocibolca or “the sweet sea.” As you approach Ometepe, the twin volcano silhouette of Concepción (1,610m) and Maderas (1,394m) dominates the horizon.
Afternoon: Check into your lakeside hotel. Visit Punta Jesus Maria, a natural sand spit extending into the lake, offering stunning views of Concepción Volcano. Watch the sunset paint the volcano and lake in brilliant colors.

Day 2: Maderas Volcano Hike & Ojo de Agua Natural Pools
Morning: After breakfast, set out on a guided hike to a viewpoint on Maderas Volcano. The trail winds through tropical dry forest and cloud forest, home to howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, and over 170 bird species. At the viewpoint, enjoy spectacular vistas of the island, Lake Nicaragua, and Concepción Volcano.
Afternoon: Cool off at Ojo de Agua, a natural spring-fed pool complex set in lush botanical gardens. These crystal-clear mineral pools are fed by an underground river originating from Maderas Volcano. Swim, relax, and enjoy the tranquil setting. Optional: visit a local women’s cooperative to learn about medicinal plants, homemade hibiscus wine, and traditional Nicaraguan cooking.

Day 3: Petroglyphs, Beaches & Island Exploration
Morning: Visit the Pre-Columbian Museum at Altagracia and explore ancient petroglyph sites scattered across the island. Ometepe is home to over 1,700 documented petroglyphs dating back to 300 BC, created by the Nahuatl and Chorotega peoples. Visit sites at Finca El Porvenir and Finca Magdalena to see spiral carvings, animal figures, and ceremonial symbols carved into volcanic boulders.
Afternoon: Continue to Playa Santo Domingo, the island’s most beautiful beach, where the sandy isthmus connecting the two volcanoes creates a picturesque panorama. Visit Playa Peru and the hidden Laguna de Charco Verde, a mystical green lagoon surrounded by legends. Enjoy swimming, beach time, and fresh lake fish at a local restaurant.

Late Morning: Board the ferry back to San Jorge port. Transfer to Managua International Airport or Granada for your onward journey.
