Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Managua – Transfer to Leon – City Walking Tour
Arrive at Managua International Airport (MGA) and meet your guide for the 1.5-hour transfer to Leon. After hotel check-in, embark on a guided walking tour of this historic university city. Visit the UNESCO-listed Leon Cathedral — the largest in Central America — and climb to its stunning white rooftop for panoramic views of the Maribios volcanic chain. Walk through the city to see revolutionary murals depicting Nicaragua’s Sandinista history, visit baroque and neoclassical churches, and explore the Museum of Legends, Arts, and Poetry. Evening free to enjoy Leon’s vibrant student atmosphere.
Overnight: Leon | Meals: Welcome drink
Day 2: Cerro Negro Volcano Boarding Adventure
Morning: After an early breakfast, depart for Cerro Negro, Central America’s youngest and one of its most active volcanoes (last erupted 1999). The 45-minute drive takes you through rural Nicaraguan countryside to the base of this striking black cinder cone. Your guide provides safety briefing and equipment: protective jumpsuit, goggles, and gloves.
The Hike: A moderate 1-hour hike carries you up 728 meters to the summit, carrying your volcano board. Along the way, your guide explains the volcano’s geology and unique ecosystem. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the volcanic chain including Telica, San Cristobal, and El Hoyo.
The Ride: After strapping on your gear, sit on your custom-built wooden board and push off down the 41-degree slope of volcanic ash and gravel. Reach speeds of 40-50 km/h during the exhilarating 2-3 minute descent. Most travelers do two runs for the full experience. This is the birthplace of volcano boarding — an activity you can only do in Nicaragua!
Afternoon: Return to Leon for a well-deserved lunch. Free afternoon to relax, visit museums, or enjoy Leon’s cafe culture around the main square.
Overnight: Leon | Meals: Breakfast
Day 3: Juan Venado Wildlife Reserve – Las Penitas Beach – Departure
Morning: After breakfast, head to the Pacific coast for a wildlife-spotting boat tour through the mangrove channels of Isla Juan Venado Nature Reserve. Spot crocodiles, iguanas, herons, frigatebirds, and countless other species in this pristine mangrove ecosystem. Continue to Las Penitas Beach for some relaxation and beach time on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast.
