Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Managua to Esteli – San Jacinto Mud Fields

Morning: Depart Managua heading north through Nicaragua’s agricultural heartland. The landscape gradually transforms from tropical dry forest to cool mountain highlands. Stop at the San Jacinto geothermal mud fields (Hervideros de San Jacinto) at the base of Telica Volcano. Watch boiling mud pots bubble and steam vents hiss — a dramatic demonstration of the region’s volcanic activity. Local children sell small pottery pieces fired in the hot mud.

Afternoon: Arrive in Esteli, Nicaragua’s cigar capital, situated at 844 meters above sea level. Check into your hotel and take an orientation walk through the city. Esteli is known for its vibrant street art, including impressive murals depicting Nicaraguan history and culture. Visit the central park and cathedral.

Evening: Welcome dinner featuring northern Nicaraguan specialties.

Overnight: Esteli | Meals: Dinner

Day 2: Esteli Cigar Factory Immersion

Morning: After breakfast, dive into Nicaragua’s legendary cigar industry. Esteli produces some of the world’s finest premium cigars, rivaling Cuba’s best. Visit El Fumador Cigar Factory or Plasencia Cigars for a comprehensive behind-the-scenes tour. Learn the complete process from tobacco seed to finished cigar:

  • Visit tobacco curing barns where leaves age for 3-5 years
  • Watch master torcedores (cigar rollers) hand-roll premium cigars
  • Learn about wrapper, binder, and filler leaf selection
  • Understand the fermentation process that develops flavor
  • Visit quality control where each cigar is inspected and tested

Afternoon: Visit a tobacco plantation in the Esteli Valley to see tobacco growing in the fields. The valley’s unique microclimate — volcanic soil, altitude, and consistent humidity — creates ideal conditions for wrapper-grade tobacco. Meet local farmers and learn about sustainable farming practices. End the day at the Esteli Cigar Museum. Optional: cigar tasting session with aged rums.

Overnight: Esteli | Meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Miraflor Cloud Forest Reserve – Rural Community Experience

Morning: Depart Esteli for the Miraflor Nature Reserve (30km northeast, elevation 800-1,400m). This protected area spans three climate zones — dry tropical forest, coffee-growing midlands, and misty cloud forest at the highest elevations. Miraflor is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve candidate and is one of Nicaragua’s best birdwatching destinations with over 300 species recorded.

Begin with a guided nature walk through the cloud forest. Your local guide explains the unique ecosystem: epiphyte-covered trees, wild orchids (over 200 species), bromeliads, and towering tree ferns. Wildlife encounters may include:

  • Howler monkeys and white-faced capuchins
  • Resplendent quetzal (seasonal, best sightings November-April)
  • Keel-billed toucans and motmots
  • Three-wattled bellbird
  • Colorful butterflies including blue morphos

Afternoon: Visit a rural homestead in the La Rampla or La Pita community. Participate in a hands-on coffee or agricultural experience with local farmers. Try your hand at milking a cow, making fresh corn tortillas, or processing organic coffee cherries. Enjoy a traditional campesino lunch prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Evening: Stay at a community eco-lodge or homestay in Miraflor. Experience genuine rural Nicaraguan hospitality and, weather permitting, incredible stargazing from the highlands.

Overnight: Miraflor Reserve | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Matagalpa Coffee Country – Selva Negra

Morning: After a traditional breakfast, depart Miraflor and drive south to Matagalpa (approximately 1.5 hours). Matagalpa is Nicaragua’s premier coffee-growing region, with ideal conditions of altitude (700-1,500m), volcanic soil, and shade-grown techniques producing premium Arabica beans.

Visit Selva Negra Cloud Forest Reserve and Coffee Estate, a historic German-established coffee plantation functioning as a sustainable model farm since 1891. Tour the estate on a comprehensive coffee tour covering:

  • Shade-grown coffee fields beneath native forest canopy
  • Organic farming methods and certification process
  • Coffee processing: wet mill, drying patios, sorting
  • Roasting demonstrations and techniques
  • Professional coffee cupping (tasting) session

Afternoon: Guided cloud forest nature walk on Selva Negra’s 30km trail network. The reserve protects 122 hectares of virgin cloud forest, home to howler monkeys, agoutis, coatis, and an extraordinary diversity of orchids and birds. Visit the estate’s organic farm, cheese factory, and sustainable restaurant.

Evening: Overnight at Selva Negra’s charming mountain lodge or a hotel in Matagalpa city. Enjoy farm-to-table dining with estate-grown produce.

Overnight: Selva Negra Ecolodge or Matagalpa | Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 5: Matagalpa City – Coffee Museum – Return to Managua

Morning: Visit Matagalpa city, a charming highland town known as the “Pearl of the North.” Tour the Matagalpa Coffee Museum to learn about the region’s coffee history dating back to the 1850s when German immigrants established the first large-scale plantations. Walk through the city’s central park, visit the cathedral, and browse local artisan shops for coffee beans to take home.

Time permitting, visit the Apante viewpoint overlooking the city and surrounding mountains, or explore the nearby Cañon de Somoto (add-on, if time allows).

Afternoon: Scenic drive back to Managua (approximately 2.5 hours), with stops for last photographs of the stunning mountain scenery. Arrive at Managua International Airport for your departure flight.
