Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Managua — Granada
Airport pick-up at Managua International. Transfer to Granada, Nicaragua’s jewel of colonial architecture. Settle into your B&B in the historic center. Afternoon walking tour: the candy-colored Cathedral on Parque Central, Calle La Calzada with its restaurants and galleries, and the Convento y Museo San Francisco with its pre-Columbian statues. Evening: welcome dinner at a restaurant overlooking the cathedral. Overnight in Granada.
Day 2: Granada — Colonial City & Lake Nicaragua Islets
Morning: full tour of Granada’s colonial treasures — the Casa de los Tres Mundos cultural center, the Fortaleza La Pólvora with city views, and the Mercado Municipal for local crafts. Afternoon: boat tour through Las Isletas — 365 volcanic islets scattered across Lake Nicaragua, formed by a massive eruption of Mombacho Volcano. Spot howler monkeys, tropical birds, and the Spanish fort on Isla San Pablo. Visit a local family living on one of the islets. Overnight in Granada.
Day 3: Ometepe Island — Twin Volcanoes
Ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe Island — formed by two volcanoes rising dramatically from the world’s 19th largest lake. The name “Ometepe” comes from Nahuatl meaning “two mountains.” Visit the Pre-Columbian Museum at Altagracia to see petroglyphs and ceramic artifacts from the indigenous Chorotega and Nahua peoples. Explore the natural pools of Ojo de Agua — crystal-clear mineral springs fed by an underground river from Maderas Volcano. Overnight in Ometepe eco-lodge.
Day 4: Concepción & Maderas Volcanoes
Hike the lower slopes of either Concepción (active, 1,610m) or Maderas (dormant, crater lake at summit). Concepción offers challenging ascent with 360° views of Lake Nicaragua; Maderas is a lush cloud forest hike ending at a mystical crater lagoon. Visit the Charco Verde Nature Reserve — a lagoon ecosystem with howler monkeys, caimans, and over 150 bird species. Afternoon: visit Santo Domingo Beach — Ometepe’s best swimming spot. Overnight in Ometepe.
Day 5: San Juan del Sur — Pacific Beach Life
Return ferry to the mainland. Drive to San Juan del Sur — Nicaragua’s premier Pacific beach town. Afternoon at leisure: swim, surf, or relax at Playa Maderas. Optional: catamaran sunset cruise along the Pacific coast. Visit the Cristo de la Misericordia statue overlooking the bay — one of the tallest Christ statues in the world. Evening: seafood dinner at a beachfront restaurant. Overnight in San Juan del Sur.
