Chile: 5-Day Atacama Desert Self-Drive — Moon Valley & Salt Flats

Chile: 5-Day Atacama Desert Self-Drive — Moon Valley & Salt Flats

The Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert on Earth and one of the most otherworldly landscapes on the planet. This 5-day self-drive adventure based from San Pedro de Atacama puts you behind the wheel to explore Mars-like valleys, flamingo-filled salt flats, smoking volcanoes, and geyser fields at your own pace. With some of the clearest skies in the world, the Atacama is also the global capital of astrotourism — home to ALMA, the world’s largest astronomical observatory. Just $810 for this self-guided freedom.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Calama Airport — San Pedro de Atacama
Arrive at Calama Airport (El Loa), pick up your 4×4 rental vehicle. The 1.5-hour drive to San Pedro de Atacama crosses the vast Atacama Salt Flat — your first taste of this surreal landscape. Arrive in San Pedro, an adobe village at 2,400m altitude with dusty streets, whitewashed churches, and a surprisingly vibrant restaurant scene. Afternoon acclimatization walk around town. Sunset at the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) — watch the sun set over jagged salt formations and sand dunes that look like a lunar landscape. Overnight in San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 2: El Tatio Geysers — Machuca — Puritama Hot Springs
Pre-dawn departure (4:00 AM) to El Tatio Geyser Field at 4,320m — the highest geothermal field in the world. Arrive as 80+ geysers erupt against the backdrop of Andean peaks at sunrise, creating a spectacular symphony of steam and light. Enjoy a breakfast picnic among the geysers. On the way back, stop at the tiny village of Machuca (4,000m) for llama anticuchos (skewers). Afternoon soak in the Puritama Hot Springs — natural thermal pools in a canyon oasis. Evening stargazing tour (optional) — the Atacama’s skies are among the clearest on Earth. Overnight in San Pedro.

Day 3: Atacama Salt Flat — Chaxa Lagoon — Altiplanic Lagoons
Morning drive to the Atacama Salt Flat, Chile’s largest salt flat at 3,000 km². Visit the Chaxa Lagoon in Los Flamencos National Reserve — watch three species of flamingos (Chilean, Andean, and James’s) feed in the shallow brine against a backdrop of the Andes. Continue to the Altiplanic Lagoons: Miscanti and Miñiques, two intensely blue lakes at 4,200m framed by snow-capped volcanoes. Return to San Pedro. Overnight.

Day 4: Rainbow Valley — Petroglyphs — Death Valley
Morning drive to the Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoíris) — hillsides striped with green, purple, red, and white minerals that create a natural rainbow. Visit the Yerbas Buenas petroglyphs — ancient rock art dating back 10,000 years, depicting llamas, foxes, and shamans. Afternoon sandboarding at Death Valley (Valle de la Muerte) — massive sand dunes perfect for adrenaline. Sunset at the Kari Viewpoint (Piedra del Coyote) with panoramic views over the valley. Farewell dinner in San Pedro. Overnight.

Day 5: San Pedro — Calama — Departure
Morning at leisure to explore San Pedro’s artisan market and the archaeological museum (Museo del Meteorito). Drive back to Calama Airport (1.5 hours). Return rental vehicle and depart with memories of the driest and most beautiful desert on Earth.
