Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tarawa — The First Sunrise
Arrive at Bonriki International Airport on South Tarawa. Kiribati (pronounced “Kiribas”) is the only country that spans all four hemispheres and the first to see each new day. Transfer to your guesthouse. Walk along the causeways connecting the islets of South Tarawa — the most densely populated atoll in the Pacific. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 2: Tarawa WWII History — Battle of Tarawa
Full-day exploration of Tarawa’s WWII sites. The Battle of Tarawa (November 1943) was one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific — 1,000 US Marines and 4,700 Japanese defenders died in 76 hours. Visit Red Beach 2, where Marines landed under devastating fire. Explore Japanese bunkers, coastal guns still in their emplacements, and rusting tanks on the reef. Visit the WWII memorials and the American and Japanese war cemeteries. Afternoon: visit the Kiribati National Cultural Museum. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 3: North Tarawa — Traditional Life
Boat across the lagoon to North Tarawa, where traditional Gilbertese culture survives largely unchanged. Walk through villages of thatched maneaba (meeting houses) — the center of all community life. Learn about the unique Kiribati dance (te mwaie) and music. Swim on deserted beaches where the only footprints are your own. Overnight in a traditional village guesthouse on North Tarawa.
Day 4: North Tarawa Lagoon & Fishing
Spend the day with a local fisherman — learn traditional fishing techniques including net casting and hand-line fishing in the pristine lagoon. Visit a village raising black pearls. Afternoon: weaving demonstration — Kiribati women create intricate pandanus mats that take months to complete. Evening: traditional botaki (feast) with fresh-caught fish, breadfruit, and toddy (fermented coconut sap). Overnight on North Tarawa.
Day 5: Return to South Tarawa & Parliament
Boat back to South Tarawa. Visit the Parliament House (Maneaba ni Maungatabu) on Bairiki. Afternoon at leisure on the lagoon side beaches. Evening: attend a traditional dance performance (te mwaie) — Kiribati dance is energetic, with intricate hand movements telling stories of birds, waves, and daily life. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 6: Abaiang Atoll Day Trip
Boat to Abaiang Atoll, just north of Tarawa. Explore one of the first atolls in Kiribati to receive Christian missionaries in the 1850s. Visit the oldest Catholic church in Kiribati (built 1890s). Snorkeling in the crystal-clear lagoon. Visit a village copra (dried coconut) processing station — copra is Kiribati’s main export. Beach picnic. Return to Tarawa in the evening. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 7: Tabiteuea — Kiribati’s Largest Atoll (optional fly-in)
Optional day flight to Tabiteuea, Kiribati’s largest atoll stretching nearly 50 miles. Alternatively, explore more of Tarawa: visit the King George V School (oldest school in the country, attended by many future leaders), the Marine Training Centre, and local markets. Afternoon: try your hand at making Kiribati handicrafts — shell necklaces, model canoes. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 8: Betio Islet & Coast Watchers
Return to Betio (pronounced “Besso”), the site of the main WWII battle. Visit the Coast Watchers Memorial — brave men who hid on enemy-occupied islands to radio intelligence to Allied forces. Walk the length of Betio (just 1.5 miles end to end) with a WWII historian. Afternoon: beach time and snorkeling on the ocean side. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 9: Kiribati Cultural Immersion & Farewell
Morning: learn the basics of Kiribati language (te taetae ni Kiribati) — one of the few Pacific languages still spoken by over 95% of the population. Visit a local school. Afternoon: Traditional Games Day — try your hand at oreano (a spear-throwing game) and kabure (wrestling). Farewell feast with traditional dancing. Overnight in South Tarawa.
Day 10: Depart Tarawa
Morning visit to the Japanese Peace Park. Transfer to airport.
