Day 1: Arrive Catania — Transfer to Syracuse

Meet at Catania Airport and transfer to Syracuse, the ancient Greek city-state that rivaled Athens. Evening orientation walk in Ortygia island, discovering the narrow medieval lanes, sea-facing piazzas, and the Fonte Aretusa. Welcome dinner with fresh seafood. Overnight in Syracuse.

Day 2: Syracuse — The Greek Capital of the West

Morning: Neapolis Archaeological Park — the 5th-century BC Greek Theater carved from the hillside, the 3rd-century AD Roman Amphitheater, and the Latomia del Paradiso quarries. Afternoon: Ortygia deep exploration — the Temple of Apollo (570 BC), the Cathedral (Duomo) built as a Greek temple in 480 BC and transformed into a Christian church with Doric columns preserved inside, and the Caravaggio painting of Santa Lucia in the Basilica. Free evening to discover Ortygia’s trattorias. Overnight in Syracuse.

Day 3: Noto & Villa Romana del Casale

Morning: Noto, the UNESCO-listed baroque masterpiece rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Walk the golden limestone staircase of the Cathedral. Then northwest to Villa Romana del Casale (UNESCO), a 4th-century AD Roman hunting lodge famous for the finest surviving Roman floor mosaics anywhere — 3,500 square meters depicting hunting scenes, the famous “bikini girls” athletes, and mythological tales in astonishing detail and color. These mosaics were preserved by a mudslide in the 12th century. Overnight near Agrigento.

Day 4: Agrigento — Valley of the Temples

Full morning at the Valley of the Temples: explore the Temple of Concordia (430 BC, one of the 3 best preserved Greek temples in the world), Temple of Hera at the highest point with sea views, Temple of Heracles, Temple of Zeus (the largest Doric temple ever built, now a field of giant stone blocks), and the Temple of Castor and Pollux. Afternoon: visit the Scala dei Turchi — the stunning white marl cliff staircase plunging into azure water. Sunset walk along the Temple ridge — the golden light on honey-colored stone is unforgettable. Overnight near Agrigento.

Day 5: Marsala Wine & Erice Medieval Village

Morning: drive west to Marsala, the city that gave its name to the world-famous fortified wine. Visit a historic Marsala wine cellar (cantine) founded by John Woodhouse in 1773 — the English merchant who discovered that fortifying Sicilian wine for the long voyage home created something extraordinary. Tasting of Marsala Superiore and Vergine. Afternoon: cable car up to Erice, a perfectly preserved medieval village at 750m above the sea, with cobblestone streets, 60+ churches, the Castello di Venere (Venus Castle) and views of the Egadi Islands in the distance. Try the famous Genovese pastries at Maria Grammatico’s shop. Overnight near Trapani.

Day 6: Palermo — Arab-Norman UNESCO Treasures

Morning: drive along the coast to Palermo. Afternoon: Palermo’s Arab-Norman treasures — the Palazzo dei Normanni with the breathtaking Cappella Palatina (1140 AD, every inch covered in gold Byzantine mosaics, the ceiling an intricate Islamic muqarnas carved and painted in a fusion unique to Sicily). Visit the Cathedral (started 1185, added to over 600 years, mixing Norman, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles) and the Martorana Church with its dazzling 12th-century mosaics. Evening: Palermo street food dinner. Overnight in Palermo.

Day 7: Monreale & Cefalu

Morning: Monreale Cathedral (1174) — 6,340 square meters of golden mosaics telling the biblical story from Creation to Ascension, with Christ Pantocrator dominating the apse. The adjacent Benedictine cloister’s 228 uniquely carved columns surround a garden paradise. Afternoon: drive to Cefalu, a charming coastal town dominated by its Norman cathedral (1131) — legend says Roger II built it after surviving a storm at sea. Walk the medieval washhouse built over a freshwater spring, climb La Rocca for spectacular views, and swim at the town beach below the cathedral. Farewell dinner at a Michelin-recommended restaurant. Overnight in Palermo.

Day 8: Departure

Morning visit to Ballarò market for last-minute souvenir shopping (dried oregano from the mountains, Sicilian sea salt, pistachio cream). Transfer to Palermo Airport.
