Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Asmara — Africa’s Art Deco Capital
Arrive at Asmara International Airport. Your guide welcomes you to Eritrea’s capital, a UNESCO World Heritage city nicknamed “Piccola Roma” (Little Rome). Afternoon walking tour of Asmara’s main thoroughfare, Harnet Avenue, lined with palm trees and Italian colonial architecture. Visit the iconic Fiat Tagliero Building — a futuristic 1938 gas station shaped like an airplane — and the art deco Cinema Impero. Welcome dinner at an authentic Eritrean restaurant featuring injera with zigni (spicy beef stew). Overnight at Asmara hotel.
Day 2: Asmara — UNESCO World Heritage Architecture Tour
Full-day architectural walking tour of Asmara, Africa’s “Modernist City.” Visit the Cathedral of Asmara (1922, Lombard Romanesque), the Great Mosque of Asmara (1938, rationalist), the former Governor’s Palace, the Opera House (1920), and the iconic Central Post Office. Explore the Medeber market — a vast open-air recycling workshop where artisans transform scrap metal into everyday objects. Afternoon coffee ceremony at a traditional café. Visit the National Museum to understand Eritrea’s nine ethnic groups. Evening at a local bar for Asmara beer. Overnight at Asmara hotel.
Day 3: Asmara to Keren — Second City & Ancient Baobab
Morning drive (90 km) through the eastern escarpment to Keren, Eritrea’s second-largest city. Visit the famous Keren Camel Market (on market days), one of East Africa’s most authentic livestock markets. Explore the Keren War Cemetery — British and Commonwealth graves from the 1941 Battle of Keren. Visit the 500-year-old baobab tree housing the Chapel of St. Maryam Dearit in its hollow trunk — a unique fusion of nature and faith. Afternoon stroll through the colorful Keren souk. Overnight at Keren guesthouse.
Day 4: Keren to Massawa — Red Sea Coast
Spectacular drive descending from the 2,400m highlands to sea level at Massawa on the Red Sea. The temperature and landscape shift dramatically from cool highlands to tropical coast. Afternoon exploration of Massawa’s Old Town on islands connected by causeways — a mesmerising blend of Ottoman, Egyptian, and Italian architecture. Visit the Imperial Palace ruins (bombed during the war of independence) and the beautiful Sheikh Hanafi Mosque. Sunset seafood dinner at a waterfront restaurant. Overnight at Massawa hotel.
Day 5: Massawa — Red Sea & Tank Graveyard
Morning boat excursion to the Dahlak Archipelago (optional) or relax on Massawa’s beaches. Visit the famous “Tank Graveyard” — a surreal field of destroyed Ethiopian military vehicles left from the war of independence, now slowly being reclaimed by desert and rust. Afternoon explore the Ottoman-era old town with its coral-stone buildings and wooden balconies. Visit the port area to see traditional dhows. Evening drive back to Asmara. Overnight at Asmara hotel.
Day 6: Asmara — Departure
Morning visit to any remaining architectural highlights. Last coffee ceremony. Transfer to Asmara International Airport.
