Arrive and transfer to hotel. Evening orientation with an art historian specializing in West African art. Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 2: Abidjan — Contemporary Art Scene
Morning: visit La Rotonde des Arts, Côte d’Ivoire’s premier contemporary art gallery. Meet living Ivorian artists in their studios. Afternoon: National Museum for the historical collection — Baule portrait masks, Dan spoons, Senufo rhythm pounders. Evening: gallery openings (if timing aligns) and dinner in the artist-friendly Zone 4 district. Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 3: Grand-Bassam — Colonial Art Deco & Costume Museum
Day trip to Grand-Bassam. Focus on art and architecture: the beautifully decaying Art Deco and colonial buildings, the Costume Museum with its stunning textiles, and the Centre Céramique with contemporary ceramic art. Afternoon with a local artist collective. Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 4: Yamoussoukro — Basilica Art & Architecture
Drive to Yamoussoukro. The Basilica isn’t just a church — it’s an extraordinary fusion of European and African art with over 7,000 square meters of stained glass created by French masters, depicting Biblical scenes with African faces. Afternoon: visit to Boigny’s private art collection (by special arrangement). Overnight in Yamoussoukro.
Day 5: Man — Dan Mask Country
Drive to Man through beautiful mountain scenery. Afternoon: private Dan mask presentation by an elder — learn the meanings behind different mask types (the racing mask, the fire-watcher mask, the judge mask) and how masks mediate between the visible and invisible worlds. Overnight in Man.
Day 6: Man — Weaving & Liana Bridges
Morning: Dan weaving demonstration — blue-and-white strip weaving where each pattern is a coded message. Cross liana bridges. Afternoon: mask carving demonstration — see a Dan mask emerge from raw wood under the carver’s skillful hands. Overnight in Man.
Day 7: Korhogo — Senufo Art Capital
Drive to Korhogo. Afternoon in the artisans quarter: Senufo wood carving (rhythm pounders, Kpelie masks, hornbill figures), mud cloth painting (each pattern has spiritual significance), and bronze casting using the lost-wax method. Evening: private Senufo mask performance. Overnight in Korhogo.
Day 8: Fly to Abidjan & Depart
Morning visit to Korhogo’s painted houses (tourist murals on traditional compounds). Fly to Abidjan and connect to international departure.
