Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Mandalay — The Royal City

Fly into Mandalay, Myanmar’s cultural heart. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to Mahamuni Pagoda, home to the most revered Buddha image in Myanmar — covered in so many gold leaves applied by devotees that the body has become a contorted mass of gold. Sunset from Mandalay Hill — 360-degree views of the Irrawaddy River, the Shan Hills, and the city below. Overnight in Mandalay.

Day 2: Amarapura & Mingun — River Culture

Morning: drive to Amarapura, the former royal capital. Visit Mahagandayon Monastery, home to over 1,000 monks — witness the silent procession for the morning meal. Walk across U Bein Bridge, the world’s longest teak bridge at 1.2km, spanning Taungthaman Lake. Afternoon: boat to Mingun on the Irrawaddy River. Visit the Mingun Pahtodawgyi — a massive unfinished pagoda that would have been the world’s largest — and the Mingun Bell, the second-largest ringing bell in the world at 90 tons. Overnight in Mandalay.

Day 3: Mandalay to Bagan — Irrawaddy Cruise

Morning exploration of Mandalay: Shwenandaw Monastery (the only part of the Royal Palace to survive WWII bombing, with exquisite teak carvings), Kuthodaw Pagoda (the “world’s largest book” — 729 marble slabs inscribed with Buddhist scriptures). Afternoon: board a boat for the scenic Irrawaddy River cruise to Bagan. Watch rural Myanmar drift past — farmers with oxen, village children waving, ancient pagodas on the banks. Arrive Bagan in the evening. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 4: Bagan — Temples & Sunrise

Pre-dawn departure for sunrise at a temple with panoramic views — watch the mist rise over the temple plain as hot air balloons drift overhead. Full day temple exploration: Ananda Temple, Thatbyinnyu, Dhammayangyi, and hidden gems in the countryside. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon visit to a lacquerware workshop. Sunset from a temple with views over the Irrawaddy River. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 5: Bagan to Yangon — Shwedagon Sunset

Morning at leisure — optional sunrise balloon ride or cycling through the temples. Flight to Yangon. Afternoon visit to the National Museum and Bogyoke Market. Evening: return to Shwedagon Pagoda to see it at sunset — entirely different from the first visit, now that you’ve experienced the depth of Burmese Buddhist culture. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Yangon.

Day 6: Depart Yangon

Transfer to airport. Depart the Golden Land.
