Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Baghdad — City of the Arabian Nights

Arrive at Baghdad International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in central Baghdad. Welcome briefing. Afternoon: walk along Abu Nawas Street beside the Tigris River where Baghdadis have gathered for centuries. Visit the iconic Al-Mutanabbi Street, the historic book market that has been the intellectual heart of Baghdad for over 1,000 years — bookshops, tea houses, and the famous Shabandar Café where poets and writers have gathered since 1917. Overnight in Baghdad.

Day 2: Baghdad — The Round City

Full day exploring Baghdad’s extraordinary heritage. Morning: Iraq Museum — one of the world’s greatest archaeological museums, housing treasures from 7,000 years of Mesopotamian civilization including artifacts from Ur, Babylon, Nineveh, and Nimrud. See the incredible Assyrian reliefs, Sumerian statues, and the famous Warka Vase (the world’s oldest narrative relief, 3200 BC). Afternoon: visit the Al-Kadhimiya Mosque (one of Shia Islam’s holiest shrines) and the Abbasid Palace, a 13th-century architectural gem. Evening: dinner of masgouf — Iraq’s national dish of carp grilled over an open fire beside the Tigris. Overnight in Baghdad.

Day 3: Babylon — The Hanging Gardens

Day trip to Babylon (1.5 hours south). Walk through the reconstructed Ishtar Gate with its blue-glazed brick dragons and bulls — the original is in Berlin’s Pergamon Museum, but the reconstruction at the site is stunning. Walk the Processional Way, see the foundations of Nebuchadnezzar’s palace and the site of the legendary Hanging Gardens (one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World), and visit the Lion of Babylon — a 2,600-year-old basalt sculpture still standing guard. Afternoon: climb the hill where Saddam Hussein built his palace overlooking the ruins — a stark layer of modern history atop the ancient. Overnight in Baghdad.

Day 4: Najaf & Kufa — Sacred Cities

Drive south to Najaf (2.5 hours), one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam. Visit the Imam Ali Shrine — the magnificent golden-domed mosque where Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law, is buried. Walk through the Wadi al-Salam (Valley of Peace), the world’s largest cemetery where millions have been buried for 1,400+ years. Afternoon: visit Kufa, site of the Great Mosque of Kufa (founded 638 AD), one of the earliest mosques in Islam. Overnight in Karbala.

Day 5: Karbala — The Holy City

Full day in Karbala, the site of the Battle of Karbala (680 AD), one of the most significant events in Islamic history. Visit the Imam Hussein Shrine and the Al-Abbas Shrine — both stunning architectural masterpieces with golden domes, intricate mirror work, and constant streams of pilgrims. Walk between the two shrines along the famous Bayn al-Haramayn plaza. Afternoon: visit the Karbala Museum for historical context. Overnight in Karbala.

Day 6: Ur & Nasiriyah — Birthplace of Abraham

Drive to Nasiriyah (2.5 hours) to visit Ur, the ancient Sumerian city and birthplace of the Prophet Abraham. Climb the Great Ziggurat of Ur — a 4,100-year-old stepped temple pyramid built by King Ur-Nammu, miraculously preserved after four millennia. Explore the royal tombs where Sir Leonard Woolley discovered the incredible Royal Cemetery of Ur in the 1920s. Visit Abraham’s house (the traditional site). The Mesopotamian Marshes (Ahwar) are nearby — a UNESCO site and the traditional home of the Marsh Arabs (Ma’dan). Overnight in Nasiriyah.

Day 7: Samarra & Return to Baghdad

Drive to Samarra (3 hours north of Baghdad). Visit the Great Mosque of Samarra with its extraordinary Malwiya Minaret — a 52-meter spiral tower built in 851 AD that is one of the most distinctive structures in Islamic architecture. Climb the spiral ramp to the top for views over the Tigris. Visit the Abbasid Caliphal Palace ruins. Afternoon return to Baghdad. Farewell dinner with Kurdish-influenced cuisine from northern Iraq. Overnight in Baghdad.

Day 8: Depart Baghdad

Morning: Ctesiphon (Taq Kasra) — the world’s largest single-span brick arch, built in the 3rd century AD by the Sassanian Empire. Standing 37 meters high, this is one of the most impressive ancient structures still standing anywhere. Transfer to airport.
