Day 1: Arrive Pago Pago — The Best Natural Harbor in the South Pacific
Fly into Pago Pago International Airport on Tutuila Island. The approach over Pago Pago Harbor — a dramatically eroded volcanic crater filled by the sea — is one of the Pacific’s most spectacular landings. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation: visit the Jean P. Haydon Museum in Fagatogo village, showcasing Samoan culture — siapo (barkcloth), ula (ceremonial necklaces), and traditional tattoo tools. Walk through the Fagatogo Market, a vibrant hub of local life with fresh fish, tropical fruits, and Samoan handicrafts. Welcome dinner featuring palusami (taro leaves baked in coconut cream) and oka (raw fish marinated in coconut milk). Overnight in Pago Pago.
Day 2: National Park of American Samoa — Rainforest & Coral Reef
Full day in the National Park of American Samoa, the only U.S. national park south of the equator and one of the least visited. Spread across three islands, the Tutuila section offers trails through pristine tropical rainforest. Hike the Pola Island Trail to the dramatic Pola Tai sea cliffs, rising 420 feet from the ocean — nesting site for frigatebirds and boobies. Continue to the Mount Alava Trail for panoramic views over Pago Pago Harbor from 1,610 feet. The park protects 13,500 acres — 4,000 on land, 9,500 underwater. Afternoon: snorkel the coral reefs off Ofu Beach (weather permitting), one of the healthiest reef systems in the Pacific with over 200 coral species. Return to Pago Pago. Overnight in Pago Pago.
Day 3: Samoan Village Life — Fa’a Samoa (The Samoan Way)
Immerse yourself in traditional Samoan culture — fa’a Samoa, the “Samoan Way,” remains the foundation of daily life here. Visit the village of Vatia on Tutuila’s north coast, one of the most traditionally oriented communities. Meet with the matai (village chief) for an ava (kava) ceremony, an essential Samoan ritual of welcome. Learn about the fale (traditional open-sided house) architecture, the communal way of life, and the importance of family (aiga). Watch demonstrations of siapo-making (barkcloth painting), coconut weaving, and umu (earth oven cooking). Lunch is the umu feast you helped prepare: roasted pig, breadfruit, taro, and palusami. Afternoon: visit Leone village, the first place missionaries landed in 1832, with its historic church and peaceful bay.
Day 4: East Tutuila Exploration — Blowholes & Hidden Coves
Full day driving the dramatic east coast of Tutuila. Visit the Alao blowholes where waves force water through lava tubes in spectacular geysers. Swim at Tula village beach. Drive to the easternmost point at Aunu’u Island viewpoint. Afternoon: visit Nu’uuli Falls, a 65-foot waterfall cascading into a crystal-clear pool — perfect for a swim. Hike to Larsen’s Bay, a secluded beach with excellent snorkeling. Evening: experience a fiafia night — traditional Samoan dancing, fire knife dancing (ailao afi), and Samoan songs. Farewell dinner under the stars. Overnight in Pago Pago.
Day 5: Departure
Morning visit to the Fagatogo Market for last-minute Samoan treasures. Transfer to airport.
