Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Tutuila — Pago Pago & National Park
Arrive Pago Pago. Two days exploring Tutuila: National Park of American Samoa (Mount Alava Trail, Pola Island), Pago Pago Harbor, Fagatogo Market, Jean P. Haydon Museum, and Nu’uuli Falls. Village cultural experience: kava ceremony, umu feast, siapo-making demonstration. Overnight in Pago Pago (2 nights).
Day 3: Fly to the Manu’a Islands — Ta’ū & Ofu
Take the inter-island flight to the Manu’a Islands (about 45 minutes). This is one of the most remote inhabited regions under the U.S. flag — fewer than 1,500 people live across these three volcanic islands. Arrive at Ofu. The approach reveals Ofu Beach — a 2-mile crescent of pristine white sand backed by volcanic peaks, with a coral reef just offshore. This beach is arguably the finest in the entire National Park of American Samoa system. Afternoon: snorkel the coral gardens — the reef here has some of the highest coral coverage in the entire Pacific. Overnight in Ofu.
Day 4: Ofu & Olosega — The Joined Islands
Explore Ofu and Olosega, connected by a narrow bridge. Hike the Tumu Mountain Trail on Ofu for panoramic views of both islands and the turquoise lagoon. Visit Olosega village, one of the most traditional communities in American Samoa. Afternoon: more snorkeling on Ofu Beach — the shallow lagoon is perfect for spotting sea turtles, parrotfish, and occasionally manta rays. Overnight in Ofu.
Day 5: Ta’ū — The Sacred Island
Boat crossing to Ta’ū (about 1 hour), the largest of the Manu’a Islands. Ta’ū is considered sacred in Samoan tradition — according to legend, the goddess Nafanua originated here. Visit the village of Ta’ū, the birthplace of Margaret Mead’s groundbreaking anthropological work “Coming of Age in Samoa” (1928). Hike into the National Park section on Ta’ū: Lata Mountain (966m), the highest peak in American Samoa, rises dramatically from the ocean. The cloud forest on its summit is home to the rare Samoan starling and the elusive flying fox. Overnight in Ta’ū.
Day 6: Ta’ū Coastal Exploration — Return to Tutuila
Morning: explore Ta’ū’s dramatic coastline — ancient lava flows have created a rugged shore of black basalt contrasting with the blue Pacific. Visit Faleasao village and its stunning beach. Afternoon: fly back to Tutuila. Evening: farewell fiafia night with fire knife dancing. Overnight in Pago Pago.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer to Pago Pago International Airport.
