Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Montt to Puerto Varas

Arrive at Puerto Montt Airport and transfer to the charming lakeside town of Puerto Varas, just 20 minutes away. Set against the stunning backdrop of Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes across the shimmering waters of Lago Llanquihue, Puerto Varas is known as the “City of Roses” for its beautifully tended gardens. The town’s German colonial heritage is visible everywhere — in the architecture of the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon, a wooden church modeled after the Marienkirche in the Black Forest, and in the bakeries selling kuchen (German-style cake) and strudel. Spend the afternoon exploring the waterfront promenade, visiting the Pablo Fierro Museum — a whimsical house-museum built from recycled materials — and browsing the artisan craft market. Evening dinner of fresh lake-caught salmon and German-Chilean fusion cuisine at a restaurant overlooking the lake.

Day 2: Vicente Perez Rosales National Park

Depart after breakfast for a full day exploring Chile’s oldest national park, Vicente Perez Rosales, a wonderland of volcanoes, waterfalls, and lakes. First stop is the thundering Petrohue Falls (Saltos del Petrohue), where the emerald-green waters of the Petrohue River cascade over ancient volcanic basalt formations formed by lava flows from Osorno Volcano. Continue to Todos los Santos Lake, a stunning body of emerald water surrounded by dense temperate rainforest and towering volcanoes. Known as the “Emerald Lake” for its brilliant green color, the lake offers views of Osorno, Puntiagudo, and Tronador volcanoes. Day 3: Chiloe Island

Travel south to Pargua to board the ferry across the Chacao Channel to Chiloe Island, the second-largest island in South America after Tierra del Fuego. Chiloe feels like a different world — a land of rolling green hills, wooden churches (16 of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites), and seaside villages where the houses are built on stilts (palafitos) over the water. Begin in the island’s capital, Castro, to see the iconic palafito houses lining the waterfront in a rainbow of colors, and visit the Church of San Francisco, one of the finest examples of Chiloe’s unique wooden Jesuit architecture. Continue to the photogenic village of Achao on the island of Quinchao to see its 18th-century wooden church, the oldest in Chile. In the afternoon, visit the Punihuil penguin colony in Chiloe National Park, where you can observe both Magellanic and Humboldt penguins nesting on the offshore islets — one of the few places in the world where these two species coexist. Optional lunch of traditional curanto, Chiloe’s famous feast of clams, mussels, sausages, chicken, and potatoes steamed in an underground pit with nalca leaves.

Day 4: Puerto Varas Departure

Enjoy a final morning in Puerto Varas with a leisurely breakfast overlooking Lago Llanquihue and the Osorno Volcano. Time permitting, visit the shoreside German Colonial Museum to learn about the mid-19th century German settlement that shaped this region, or take one last walk through the rose gardens of the town plaza.
