Overview
Intrepid Travel’s classic 6-day W-Trek gives you the time to truly absorb the majesty of Torres del Paine National Park at a sustainable, enjoyable pace. Unlike express itineraries that compress the trek into a punishing schedule, this tour includes proper rest and acclimatization time in Puerto Natales, a full-day hike to the base of the towers with a civilized mid-morning start (no 4:00 AM alarm!), and optional activities like kayaking among icebergs on Grey Lake. Intrepid’s expert mountain guides have walked these trails hundreds of times and know every switchback, every condor nest, every hidden viewpoint, and every secret spot for that iconic Patagonia photograph. You will trek through all three valleys that form the famous W shape — hiking to the face of Grey Glacier with its cathedral-like ice wall, climbing into the sublime French Valley where Los Cuernos pierce the sky, and ascending to the turquoise lake at the base of the three granite towers. Each night is spent in mountain refugios or eco-camps offering hot showers, warm beds, and hearty Patagonian meals. Between the hiking, there is time to sit by lakeshores watching icebergs drift, to listen for the crack of calving glaciers, and to simply stand in silence surrounded by some of the most magnificent mountain scenery on the planet.
Itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Natales Arrival
Arrive in Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, and settle into your hotel. This charming fishing port on the shores of Last Hope Sound is the perfect base for preparing for your trekking adventure. Spend the afternoon exploring the town — visit the waterfront promenade, browse the gear shops for any last-minute trekking essentials, and stop by the Museo Historico to learn about the region’s indigenous Kawesqar people and the early European explorers who navigated these fjords. In the evening, join your Intrepid group leader and fellow trekkers for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant, where you will go over the trekking itinerary and get your packing lists sorted.
Day 2: Torres del Paine — Park Entry & Paine Grande
After breakfast, board a private vehicle for the scenic drive to Torres del Paine National Park, approximately two hours from Puerto Natales. Stop at the park entrance to complete registration and admire your first views of the Paine Massif. Continue to Pudeto dock and board the catamaran across the brilliant turquoise waters of Lake Pehoe to Refugio Paine Grande, your base for the first two nights. After checking in, take an afternoon acclimatization hike along the shores of Lake Pehoe, enjoying spectacular views of the Cuernos del Paine reflected in the lake’s still waters. The relatively flat trail is perfect for warming up your legs before the bigger days ahead. Return to the refugio for dinner and sunset views of the mountains turning pink and gold.
Day 3: Grey Glacier Trail
After an early breakfast, set out on the trail to Grey Glacier, hiking north along the shores of Grey Lake. The 22-kilometer round trip trail winds through ancient lenga forests and across rocky terrain, with the glacier gradually revealing itself as you approach. Arrive at the Grey Glacier viewpoint, where the massive ice wall towers above the lake, and watch as icebergs calve from the glacier’s face with a thunderous crack. For those who wish, an optional kayaking excursion takes you paddling among the icebergs — an unforgettable up-close encounter with the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Return to Refugio Paine Grande in the late afternoon for a hot shower and dinner, your legs satisfyingly tired from the trail.
Day 4: French Valley Hike
Pack your backpack for the move to a new refugio as you hike into the heart of the W-Trek. Depart Paine Grande heading east, following the trail along the shores of Lake Skottsberg with ever-improving views of the Cuernos del Paine. Enter the French Valley at Campamento Italiano and begin the ascent to the French Valley lookout. Here, surrounded by a natural amphitheater of granite walls and hanging glaciers, you will understand why the French Valley is considered the most beautiful part of the entire W-Trek. Listen for the rumble of avalanches cascading down the face of Paine Grande. Continue to Refugio Los Cuernos or Refugio Frances, where comfortable beds and hot meals await. Total hiking: approximately 8 hours.
Day 5: Base Torres Hike
Today is the big one — the ascent to the base of the Torres del Paine, but with the luxury of a mid-morning start. After a relaxed breakfast, transfer by vehicle to the trailhead near Hotel Las Torres and begin the climb through the Ascencio Valley. The trail ascends steadily through lenga forests, crossing streams and passing through golden meadows before emerging above the treeline. Navigate the final boulder field to reach the edge of the turquoise glacial lake at the base of the three towering granite spires. The view of Torres d’Agostini (2,850m), Torres Central (2,800m), and Torres Monzino (2,600m) rising vertically from the glacier-fed lake is one of the most iconic scenes in South America. After ample time for photos and reflection, descend to a waiting vehicle and transfer to a comfortable hotel near the park. Total hiking: approximately 9 hours. Celebration dinner to toast your achievement.
Day 6: Puerto Natales Departure
Enjoy a final Patagonian breakfast with views of the Paine Massif before boarding the transfer back to Puerto Natales. Arrive by midday with time to explore the artisan markets, visit the Singular Patagonia hotel’s former cold storage plant museum, or simply relax by the waterfront reflecting on your trek. Transfer to the airport or bus station for your onward journey, carrying memories of glacier hikes, condor sightings, and the incomparable beauty of Torres del Paine.
