Day 1: Arrive Salalah — Land of Frankincense

• Arrive at Salalah International Airport (SLL). Your Omani guide greets you. Salalah — the capital of Dhofar, southern Oman — is the legendary land of frankincense, the Queen of Sheba, and the biblical land of Punt. It occupies a unique position: the only place in the Arabian Peninsula touched by the Indian Ocean monsoon (khareef), transforming the landscape into a lush green paradise from June to September while the rest of Arabia bakes in summer heat
• Visit the Al Baleed Archaeological Park (UNESCO World Heritage) — the ruins of the ancient port city of Zafar, which from the 8th to 16th centuries was one of the most important trading centers of the medieval world, linking Arabia with India, China, and East Africa. The site includes a museum chronicling the frankincense trade that made this region legendary. Frankincense — the dried sap of the Boswellia tree that only grows in this corner of the world — was once more valuable than gold, used by Egyptians for mummification, Romans for incense, and in traditional medicine across civilizations
• Evening stroll along the Salalah Corniche — a palm-lined seaside promenade with coconut palms (unique in Arabia), sandy beaches, and views of the Arabian Sea

Day 2: Mountains, Waterfalls & The Queen of Sheba

• Morning drive into the Dhofar Mountains — during khareef (June–September), the mountains are wrapped in mist, the valleys carpeted in brilliant green, and seasonal waterfalls cascade down cliff faces. This is the Arabia that astonishes everyone who sees it — lush beyond imagination for a region defined by desert
• Visit Wadi Darbat — a stunning valley where during khareef, a powerful waterfall plunges into a lake surrounded by green meadows. Camels, goats, and cattle graze freely in the meadows, and you can take a boat ride on the seasonal lake. Even outside monsoon season, the permanent pools and surrounding cliffs make this a beautiful stop
• Drive to Jabal Samhan — the highest point in Dhofar (2,100m). The dramatic Tawi Atayr sinkhole (also called “Bird’s Well” — over 200m deep) offers vertigo-inducing views. On clear days, you can see the Arabian Sea to the south and the Empty Quarter desert to the north
• Visit the ruins of Sumhuram (Khor Rori, UNESCO) — an ancient fortified port city founded around the 3rd century BC, associated with the Queen of Sheba’s legendary frankincense trade. The harbor below, now a lagoon, was once the shipping point for frankincense caravans. Archaeological digs have revealed trade goods from India (pottery), Rome (glass), and East Africa — evidence of an ancient globalization centered on this remote corner of Arabia
• Stop at Taqah Castle — a beautifully restored 19th-century fort that was the residence of the local Wali (governor), with traditional Omani rooms, hand-painted ceilings, and exhibits on Dhofari life

Day 3: Blowholes, Empty Quarter & Frankincense Trees

• Morning drive west along the dramatic coastal road to Mughsail Beach — a pristine white sand beach stretching 6 km, backed by towering limestone cliffs. The main attraction: the Marneef Cave blowholes — natural fissures in the cliff face where waves compress air and water, shooting geysers up to 30m into the air with a thunderous boom. In Arabic, they’re called “Mughsail” — “the washing place” — as the sea seems to be washing the cliffs
• Continue to the frankincense tree park in the Wadi Dawkah area (UNESCO) — the only place in the world where frankincense trees (Boswellia sacra) grow naturally in such concentration. These gnarled trees — looking more like bonsai than forest — produce the precious resin when their bark is cut. The harvesting process, which takes place in spring, hasn’t changed in 5,000 years. Walk among the trees and smell the aromatic resin that built empires
• Afternoon: venture into the Rub’ al Khali (The Empty Quarter) — the largest continuous sand desert on Earth, covering 650,000 sq km across four countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, Yemen). The dunes here — some towering over 250m — are among the tallest in the world. Experience the profound silence of the deep desert, broken only by wind
• Sunset from the dunes — the play of light and shadow on the immense sand waves is one of the most spectacular desert views anywhere. The sand’s color shifts from butter-yellow to deep orange to crimson as the sun sets
• Return to Salalah. Evening visit to the Haffa Souk (Frankincense Souk) — the historic marketplace where frankincense has been traded for millennia. The air is thick with the scent of frankincense, myrrh, and traditional perfumes. Purchase authentic frankincense resin, Dhofari frankincense burners (mabkhara), and handcrafted souvenirs directly from vendors whose families have traded here for generations

Day 4: Beach & Departure

• Morning at leisure on the pristine beaches of Salalah — Al Fazayah Beach, a crescent of white sand framed by dramatic cliffs (5 km west of Mughsail), is one of Oman’s most beautiful beaches, with turquoise water and perfect swimming conditions from October to May
• Optional: visit a coconut plantation — the ubiquitous coconut palms of Dhofar are another unique feature in Arabia, producing sweet coconuts, coconut oil, and the distinctive Dhofari coconut drink
