Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado to Tambopata — Monkey Island
Arrive at Puerto Maldonado Airport. Transfer to the river port and board a motorized canoe for the journey up the Madre de Dios River into Tambopata National Reserve. Arrive at your eco-lodge nestled in the jungle. Afternoon excursion to Monkey Island — a sanctuary for rescued primates including capuchin, spider, and squirrel monkeys. Watch these intelligent creatures interact in their natural habitat. After dinner, guided night walk to spot tarantulas, stick insects, tree frogs, and night monkeys. Overnight at jungle eco-lodge.
Day 2: Lake Sandoval & Canopy Walk
Early morning departure for Lake Sandoval, a stunning oxbow lake in the heart of Tambopata. Paddle canoes across mirror-calm waters to spot the resident family of giant river otters — one of the Amazon’s most endangered and charismatic species. Look for hoatzins (stinkbirds), caimans, and red howler monkeys in the surrounding trees. Afternoon canopy walkway — climb 30 meters up to walk among the treetops on hanging bridges, getting eye-to-eye with macaws flying past. Evening caiman spotting by flashlight along the river. Overnight at jungle eco-lodge.
Day 3: Parakeet Clay Lick & Departure
Pre-dawn departure to the parakeet clay lick. Watch hundreds of cobalt-winged parakeets and other parrots gather on the riverbank to eat mineral-rich clay — a spectacular wildlife phenomenon. The clay neutralizes toxins in the seeds they eat. Breakfast back at the lodge. Morning jungle walk for last wildlife spotting. Canoe transfer back to Puerto Maldonado. Transfer to airport for departure, enriched by your Amazon experience.
