Day 1: Arrive Monrovia — Africas First Republic
Arrive at Roberts International Airport. Transfer to Monrovia. Afternoon orientation: Providence Island (the 1822 landing site), Centennial Pavilion, and the National Museum for an overview of Liberia’s unique history. Evening: Waterside Market for an introduction to Liberian crafts — the famous country cloth (hand-woven cotton strips sewn together), carved wooden masks, and the bold lappa fabrics. Dinner at a Monrovia restaurant. Overnight Monrovia.
Day 2: Bong County — Mask Dancers & Village Traditions
Full-day excursion to Bong County (approximately 2.5 hours from Monrovia), the heartland of Liberia’s traditional culture. The highlight: a performance of sacred masked dancers from the Poro (male) or Sande (female) secret societies, the institutions that have governed much of rural Liberian life for centuries. The masks — elaborate, powerful, and charged with spiritual significance — are a direct link to pre-colonial African culture. The masked figures move with extraordinary presence, accompanied by drumming, singing, and the crack of whips. This is not a tourist show — it’s a genuine cultural experience arranged through community elders. Afternoon: learn traditional Liberian crafts — perhaps carving your own simple mask, or trying country cloth weaving. Share a meal with the village. Evening return to Monrovia. Overnight Monrovia.
Day 3: Monrovia — Heritage & Departure
Morning: visit the Ducor Palace Hotel ruins for haunting views over the city and Atlantic. Last exploration of Waterside Market or the Liberia Artisan Market for souvenirs. Transfer to Roberts International Airport for departure.
