Arrive at Roberts International Airport. Transfer to Monrovia, a city named after James Monroe, the American president who supported the colonization movement that founded Liberia. The capital sprawls along the Atlantic coast with a distinctive Americo-Liberian architectural heritage. Afternoon orientation: the Centennial Pavilion and the Executive Mansion. Visit Providence Island, where the first group of freed American slaves landed in 1822 — the founding moment of the Liberian nation. The island’s museum and monuments tell a story unique in African history. Welcome dinner featuring Liberian cuisine: cassava leaf stew, jollof rice, palm butter with fish, and pepper soup. Day 2: Monrovia — Americo-Liberian Heritage
Full day exploring Liberia’s capital. Morning: the National Museum of Liberia, housed in the former Supreme Court building, covering the country’s history from indigenous kingdoms to the American Colonization Society, the founding of the republic, and the modern era. Visit the Waterside Market — one of West Africa’s most vibrant, where traders sell country cloth, wooden masks, and the famous Liberian lappa fabrics. Afternoon: the crumbling Ducor Palace Hotel, once one of Africa’s finest (abandoned since the civil war), offers haunting views over the city and ocean from its hilltop perch. Day 3: Robertsport — Surfing & Lake Piso
Morning drive 3 hours northwest along the coast to Robertsport, a stunning peninsula where palm-fringed beaches meet some of West Africa’s best surf breaks. The Atlantic swells here roll in clean and consistent — Liberia is quietly becoming a surf destination. Afternoon: surfing lesson with the Robertsport Surf Club (all levels welcome) or simply enjoy the beaches — golden sand, warm water, and barely another person in sight. Visit Lake Piso, Liberia’s largest lake, a vast lagoon separated from the ocean by a narrow strip of sand. The lake and surrounding wetlands are a Ramsar site, important for migratory birds and home to fishing communities living in traditional thatched huts. Sunset over the lake is spectacular. Day 4: Robertsport to Sapo — Into the Green Heart
Full day of travel from the coast to Liberia’s deep interior. The drive (approximately 7-8 hours) passes through rubber plantations (Liberia was home to Firestone’s massive operations), traditional villages, and gradually into the forest zone. This is a travel day, but the journey itself is a window into rural Liberia — the road is an experience, not just a connection. Day 5: Sapo National Park — Pygmy Hippo Territory
Full day in Sapo National Park, Liberia’s oldest and largest protected area (180,000 hectares). Sapo protects one of West Africa’s largest remaining blocks of Upper Guinean rainforest — an ecosystem that has been reduced to less than 10% of its original extent. The park’s most famous resident is the pygmy hippopotamus, a critically endangered species found only in this region. Sapo holds one of the world’s most important populations. Morning: forest hike with experienced rangers along wildlife trails. The rainforest is cathedral-like — towering trees, lianas, and the constant sound of birds and insects. Forest elephants leave signs of their passage, chimpanzees call in the distance, and the tracks of pygmy hippos may be visible along streams. Day 6: Sapo to Monrovia — Rainforest to Capital
Final morning in Sapo for a short forest walk or village visit. Meet members of the local community to understand the relationship between the park and the people who live on its borders — Sapo’s future depends on community support. Afternoon: drive back toward Monrovia (approximately 6-7 hours). Arrive in the capital by evening. Farewell dinner at a Monrovia restaurant. Overnight Monrovia.
Day 7: Departure
Morning at leisure in Monrovia — last-minute shopping for Liberian crafts at the Waterside Market or the Liberia Artisan Market. Transfer to Roberts International Airport for departure.
