Day 1: Arrive Goma — Eastern DRC
Arrive at Goma International Airport on the shores of Lake Kivu, in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes. Transfer to your hotel with views across the lake. Afternoon orientation of Goma—visit the city’s vibrant market and the 2021 lava flow memorial that marks the path of Nyiragongo’s most recent eruption. Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking — Virunga
The day begins before dawn. Transfer to Virunga National Park headquarters at Kibumba for the gorilla trek briefing. You’ll be assigned to one of the habituated mountain gorilla families—names like Humba, Kabirizi, or Bageni—each with its own character and history. The trek climbs through terraced farmland into the bamboo zone of the Virunga volcanoes, where gorillas feed on tender bamboo shoots. The tracking can take 1-4 hours, but when you find the family, the world stops. A silverback may be just meters away, massive and peaceful. Juveniles tumble and play. A mother holds her infant close. The one hour you spend with them passes in what feels like seconds. These are the same mountain gorillas that Dian Fossey dedicated her life to studying—fewer than 1,100 remain in the wild, and every encounter supports their survival through park fees and community development. Day 3: Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage & Community Visit
Morning visit to the Senkwekwe Centre at park headquarters in Rumangabo, the world’s only facility caring for orphaned mountain gorillas. Meet the dedicated Congolese caregivers who have raised these gorillas from infancy after their families were killed by poachers—a deeply moving testament to conservation commitment. Afternoon visit to a community project supported by Virunga: perhaps a hydroelectric scheme, an agricultural cooperative, or a women’s craft initiative. Understanding the park’s community engagement is essential context—conservation here succeeds or fails with local people. Overnight Goma or Rumangabo.
Day 4: Nyiragongo Volcano Ascent — To the Lava Lake
The big climb. Departure from the Kibati trailhead (1,989m) for the 6-8 hour ascent of Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The trail climbs through five distinct vegetation zones—from farmland to lower montane forest, into giant heather and lobelia, then across old lava flows, and finally onto the volcanic scree of the summit cone. The climb is strenuous but non-technical, with porters available to carry your pack. As you gain altitude, the views across the Virunga chain—Mikeno, Karisimbi, Visoke—are extraordinary. Arrive at the summit rim (3,470m) in the late afternoon and…there it is. The world’s largest lava lake, churning and glowing in the crater below, sending up plumes of gas that catch the fading light. Simple summit shelters are provided. You spend the night on the volcano rim, watching the lava lake pulse and glow through the darkness—an experience that defies description. Day 5: Dawn at the Lava Lake & Descent
Dawn at 3,470 meters. The lava lake at sunrise is if anything more spectacular than at night—the molten surface visibly churns, plates of cooling crust forming and breaking, fountains of liquid rock shooting upward. Breakfast on the crater rim. Then the 4-5 hour descent back to Kibati, where your vehicle waits. Transfer to Goma. Afternoon at leisure—your legs have earned it. Celebration dinner with your guides and porters. Overnight Goma.
Day 6: Lake Kivu & Departure
Morning boat excursion on Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Visit a fishing village, swim in the lake’s methane-free waters (the deep layers contain dissolved methane being harnessed for power generation), and reflect on an extraordinary journey. Afternoon transfer to Goma Airport for departure.
