Day 1: Arrive Monrovia
Welcome at Roberts International Airport. Transfer to Monrovia, Liberia’s capital named after U.S. President James Monroe. Check into Mamba Point Hotel, overlooking the Atlantic. Evening orientation: walk along Broad Street, Monrovia’s main thoroughfare, and visit the Ducor Hotel ruins — once one of Africa’s finest hotels, now an atmospheric abandoned landmark with sweeping views over the city and sea. Welcome dinner featuring Liberian cuisine: palm butter, jollof rice, and grilled fish. Overnight in Monrovia. (D)
Day 2: Monrovia — The Founding Story
Full-day exploration of Monrovia’s historical heart. Begin at Providence Island — the tiny island in the Mesurado River where the first freed American slaves landed in 1822. Visit the Providence Baptist Church, Liberia’s first church and the spiritual home of the nation. Continue to the National Museum of Liberia — housed in the former Supreme Court building, its collection spans traditional masks and tribal artifacts, Americo-Liberian history, and the civil war years. Visit the Centennial Pavilion and the Masonic Temple — Freemasonry played a central role in Liberia’s founding. Afternoon: the Waterside Market, Monrovia’s largest and most colorful, where traders sell everything from country cloth to bush meat. Overnight in Monrovia. (B)
Day 3: Du River Mangrove Canoe & Chimpanzee Islands
Morning excursion to the Du River. Board a traditional canoe and paddle through the mangrove forests, watching for monkeys, birds, and the occasional crocodile. The mangroves are hauntingly beautiful — tangled roots rising from still black water, kingfishers darting between branches. Continue to the Monkey Island chimpanzee sanctuary — several forested islands in the Farmington River where retired research chimpanzees live in semi-wild conditions. Observe them from a boat as they come to the water’s edge — a remarkable conservation story. Afternoon: visit the Firestone Rubber Plantation, one of the world’s largest, established in 1926. Day 4: Monrovia → Gbarnga — Into the Interior
Drive inland to Gbarnga, the capital of Bong County. The journey takes you through Liberia’s lush interior — rubber plantations, oil palm groves, and traditional villages. Stop at the Kpatawee Waterfall for a refreshing swim in the natural pools. Arrive in Gbarnga, a town that played significant roles during Liberia’s civil war. Visit the Cuttington University campus, one of West Africa’s oldest private universities. Afternoon: visit a rural Kpelle village to experience traditional Liberian village life — meet the town chief, learn about the Poro and Sande secret societies, and watch women preparing country rice. Day 5: Kpelle Cultural Immersion
Full day in Kpelle country — Liberia’s largest ethnic group. Morning: participate in a traditional rice-farming session — rice is central to Liberian life, and Kpelle rice cultivation is a UNESCO-recognized cultural practice. Learn about the agricultural calendar, traditional tools, and the cooperative labor system. Afternoon: visit a traditional healer to learn about Liberian plant medicine. Watch Kpelle masked dancers perform — the masks represent spirits of the forest and ancestors, and the performances are accompanied by drumming and singing. Evening: cook and share a meal with a Kpelle family. Overnight in Gbarnga. (B, L, D)
Day 6: Gbarnga → Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary → Monrovia
Drive back toward the coast. Stop at the Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary, a rescue center for pangolins, crocodiles, monkeys, and other animals confiscated from the bushmeat trade. The sanctuary’s pangolin rehabilitation program is one of the few in Africa — see these extraordinary scaled mammals up close. Continue to Monrovia. Afternoon: free time to explore, shop for Liberian crafts (country cloth, carved masks, and the iconic “Liberia” T-shirts), or visit one of Monrovia’s excellent seafood restaurants. Farewell dinner at a restaurant on the beach. Overnight in Monrovia. (B, D)
Day 7: Departure
Final morning in Monrovia. Transfer to Roberts International Airport. Liberia — Africa’s first republic — leaves you with an appreciation for a country that has weathered storms and emerged with its spirit intact.
