Day 1: Maseru & Thaba-Bosiu — Sacred Mountain
Arrive Maseru, Lesotho’s capital. Visit Thaba-Bosiu — the sacred flat-topped mountain where King Moshoeshoe I established the Basotho nation in 1824. Walk the historic plateau where the Basotho successfully defended against Boer and British attacks. The mountain’s natural fortress walls and the graves of Basotho kings make this Lesotho’s most important cultural site. Drive through the picturesque foothills to Malealea — a historic trading post turned mountain lodge. Overnight at Malealea.
Day 2: Basotho Pony Trek & San Rock Art
Full-day pony trekking — the authentic way to explore Lesotho’s highlands. Mount sturdy Basotho ponies (descendants of horses introduced in the 19th century, bred for mountain terrain) and ride through dramatic valleys with a local guide. Visit the Matsaile San rock art site with centuries-old paintings of eland and hunters. Picnic lunch at a mountain stream. Cross the Makhaleng River on horseback. Return to Malealea for a well-earned dinner and local music performed by the lodge’s band — one of Africa’s most authentic cultural experiences. Overnight Malealea.
Day 3: Sehlabathebe National Park
Journey deeper into the highlands to Sehlabathebe National Park — Lesotho’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Park. The landscape here is otherworldly: rolling high-altitude grasslands dotted with unique rock formations, crystal-clear mountain pools, and endemics found nowhere else on Earth including the Drakensberg cycad and rare wattled crane. Afternoon walks to viewpoints and archaeological sites. Overnight at park lodge.
Day 4: Katse Dam & Highland Villages
Drive across the roof of Africa to Katse Dam — Africa’s highest dam at 1,993m and part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, one of the world’s largest water transfer schemes. Tour the dam wall (185m high — Africa’s tallest) and learn how Lesotho “sells water” to South Africa. Visit highland villages along the way, meeting shepherds wrapped in traditional Basotho blankets tending flocks of mohair-producing Angora goats. Overnight near Katse.
Day 5: Return to Maseru
Morning mountain views — perhaps one last walk in the crisp highland air. Descend through spectacular mountain passes back to Maseru. Farewell lunch featuring traditional Basotho cuisine. Transfer to Maseru Airport or the border.
