6-Day Garden Route & Addo Group Adventure: Forests to Elephants

Day 1: Cape Town to Hermanus — Whale Coast

Depart Cape Town along the stunning False Bay coastline. Stop at the African Penguin colony at Stony Point in Betty’s Bay — a less-crowded alternative with boardwalks right among the nesting penguins. Continue through the whale-watching capital of Hermanus, where Southern Right Whales breach in Walker Bay (June-November). Walk the scenic Cliff Path with 12km of uninterrupted ocean views. Overnight in Hermanus.

Day 2: Cape Agulhas — Where Two Oceans Meet

Journey to Cape Agulhas — the true southernmost tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans officially meet. Stand at the iconic brass marker at 34°50’00″S and photograph the historic red-and-white lighthouse (built 1848). Visit the shipwreck museum documenting the treacherous Agulhas coastline. Afternoon drive through the rolling Overberg wheatlands to Oudtshoorn. Evening tour of a working ostrich farm with the chance to feed these comical giants. Overnight in Oudtshoorn.

Day 3: Cango Caves & Swartberg Pass

Morning at the Cango Caves — choose between the Heritage Tour (easy, 60 min) or Adventure Tour (crawling through narrow passages, 90 min). After lunch, drive the legendary Swartberg Pass — one of the world’s most spectacular mountain roads with 180-degree switchbacks and views across the entire Karoo. Descend to Prince Albert for lunch at a historic farm kitchen. Return via Meiringspoort with its towering 200m quartzite cliffs and waterfall pools. Overnight in Oudtshoorn.

Day 4: Knysna & Featherbed Reserve

Cross the Outeniqua Mountains to Knysna. Morning ferry to Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head — a private reserve accessible only by boat. Guided 4×4 tour to the top of the Head for spectacular lagoon views, then a gentle 2.2km walk through coastal forest to the sea caves. Afternoon exploring Knysna’s Waterfront with its craft markets and fresh oysters. Optional sunset sailing on the lagoon. Overnight in Knysna.

Day 5: Tsitsikamma & Storms River

Full day exploring Tsitsikamma National Park. Walk across the dramatic suspension bridges spanning the Storms River Mouth. Hike into the ancient forest — some yellowwood trees here are over 800 years old. Optional adventures: bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge (world’s highest commercial bungee at 216m), canopy tour through the treetops, or kayaking into Storms River Gorge. Afternoon drive toward Addo, watching for vervet monkeys and Knysna loeries in the roadside forests. Overnight near Addo.

Day 6: Addo Elephant Safari & Return

Early morning game drive in Addo Elephant National Park when wildlife is most active. Search for Addo’s famous elephant herds, plus lion, buffalo, and the unique flightless dung beetle. After lunch, transfer to Port Elizabeth Airport for your onward journey — or extend your adventure with optional safari add-ons.
