Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Dili
Arrive at Dili airport. Meet your guide and settle into your hotel. Introductory tour of Dili including the Resistance Museum and sunset visit to Cristo Rei statue for spectacular views across the city and bay.
Day 2: Aileu – Maubisse – Hatubuilico
Depart Dili heading south into the mountains. Visit Aileu’s traditional market in the coffee-growing region. Continue to Maubisse to visit the historic Portuguese Pousada and hilltop villages. Arrive in Hatubuilico for overnight near the base of Mt Ramelau.
Day 3: Mt Ramelau Summit & Transfer to Same
Pre-dawn hike (3:30 AM start) to the summit of Mt Ramelau, the highest peak in Timor at 2,963m. Witness the magnificent sunrise above the clouds. After breakfast, transfer south to Same through spectacular mountain scenery, passing coffee plantations, traditional villages, and the legendary Fatuk Maromak road built by the Japanese Imperial Army.
Day 4: Betano – Hatudo – Zumalai – Suai
Follow the southern coastal road through fishing villages and black sand beaches. Explore the different coastal vegetation. Visit the town of Suai, center of Covalima municipality. See the old prison ruins and Black September ’99 Memorial honoring civilian victims of the independence struggle.
Day 5: Zumalai – Bobonaro – Balibo
Head back into the mountains to the north side. Visit a traditional weaving village to learn the futus tie-dye technique. Relax in the Marobo hot springs surrounded by mountains. Arrive at Balibo, site of the infamous 1975 Balibo Five incident. Overnight at Balibo Fort Hotel with privileged land and sea views.
Day 6: Batugade – Maubara – Liquica
Morning hike to caves near Balibo. Visit Batugade’s northern border point. Travel along the northern coast to Maubara’s historic 18th-century Dutch fort. Continue to Liquica, a coastal city rich in history. Overnight at Lauhata Beach Resort.
Day 7: Aipelu – Dili – Manatuto – Baucau
Visit Ai Pelo prison (built 1889 for Macau inmates). Pass through salt-producing villages and mangrove roads back to Dili for a short break. Continue east to Manatuto, then Baucau — Timor-Leste’s second city. Overnight at colonial-style Pousada Baucau.
Day 8: Venilale – Mt Perdido – Ossu – Loihuno
Explore the lush southern rainforest region with higher rainfall and dense vegetation. Optional 3-hour hike up Mt Mundo Perdido, a protected area rich in rare plants, birds, and wildlife. Marvel at views of Mt Matebian.
Day 9: Wassadiga – Baucau – Dili
Optional morning hike to Wassadiga or Labalou old resistance command posts. Return to Baucau for late lunch, then continue to Dili. Evening at leisure in the capital.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer to airport for your flight home.
