Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tongatapu — Mālō e lelei!
Arrive at Fua’amotu International Airport. Transfer to your beach resort on Tongatapu, the main island. Afternoon at leisure — explore the coastline with its dramatic limestone cliffs and blowholes. Evening traditional Tongan kava ceremony — the national drink prepared from the kava root, served in a coconut shell. Overnight at Tongatapu resort.
Day 2: Tongatapu — Ancient Kingdom & Natural Wonders
Full day exploring Tongatapu. Morning: visit the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui Trilithon, the “Stonehenge of the Pacific” — a stone arch built around 1200 AD that served as a royal gateway and possibly an astronomical observatory. Visit the Langi (terraced royal tombs) at Mu’a, the ancient capital. Afternoon: Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes — a 5km stretch where waves blast through holes in the coral limestone, creating hundreds of simultaneous geysers. Visit the Flying Foxes sanctuary where thousands of fruit bats (peka) hang from trees in the royal reserve. Overnight at Tongatapu resort.
Day 3: Vava’u — Whale Watching Paradise
Morning flight to Vava’u, Tonga’s crown jewel. Check into your waterfront accommodation. Almost immediately, you’ll see why Vava’u is famous — the stunning Port of Refuge harbor with its maze of islands, hidden lagoons, and impossibly blue water. Afternoon orientation tour of Neiafu, Vava’u’s charming main town. Evening at Mango Café, the yachties’ hangout overlooking the harbor. Overnight in Vava’u.
Day 4: Humpback Whale Encounter (Seasonal: July-October)
Full-day whale watching and swimming excursion. Tonga is one of the few places on Earth where you can legally swim with humpback whales. These gentle giants come to Tonga’s warm waters to give birth and mate. If conditions permit, experienced guides will take you into the water with whales — an experience that defies description. Even from the boat, seeing a 15-meter whale breach is unforgettable. (Outside whale season: sailing, snorkeling, and exploring Vava’u’s uninhabited islands.) Overnight in Vava’u.
Day 5: Vava’u — Swallows Cave & Mariners Cave
Boat excursion to Vava’u’s sea caves. Swallows’ Cave — a massive chamber with a vaulted ceiling filled with twittering swiftlets, the crystal water illuminated by light streaming through openings. Snorkel through the cave entrance. Then to Mariner’s Cave — entry requires diving underwater through a short tunnel to emerge inside a dark chamber where the compressed air amplifies every sound. The cave was famously described by young William Mariner, who lived in Tonga from 1806-1810. Afternoon at ‘Ene’io Botanical Garden for Tongan culture and traditional food. Overnight in Vava’u.
Day 6: Return to Tongatapu & Anahulu Cave
Morning flight back to Tongatapu. Afternoon at Anahulu Cave — a limestone cave system with an underground freshwater pool you can swim in. Visit the Talamahu Market in Nuku’alofa for Tongan handicrafts — tapa cloth (ngatu) made from mulberry bark and decorated with traditional patterns, woven pandanus mats, and whale-bone carvings. Farewell Tongan feast — ‘ota ika (marinated raw fish), lu pulu (corned beef in taro leaves and coconut cream), and fresh tropical fruit. Overnight at Tongatapu resort.
Day 7: Depart Tonga
Morning visit to the Royal Palace — a white Victorian mansion on the Nuku’alofa waterfront, home to the Tongan royal family, the last Polynesian monarchy. Transfer to airport.
