Day 1: Hobart — Mt Wellington & MONA

Your guide meets you at Hobart Airport. Private transfer to kunanyi/Mt Wellington summit for the panoramic introduction to Tasmania. Afternoon: MONA. Evening: welcome dinner at a Hobart waterfront restaurant — your guide introduces the journey ahead over Tasmanian sparkling wine (the island’s cool climate produces some of Australia’s finest sparkling). Overnight in Hobart boutique hotel.

Day 2: Hobart to Cradle Mountain — Wilderness Immersion

Drive through the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands to Cradle Mountain. Stop at Lake St. Clair and the Wall in the Wilderness (a 100m-long series of carved Huon pine panels by sculptor Greg Duncan, telling the story of the Central Highlands — a monumental artwork in progress). Arrive Cradle Mountain by afternoon. Your guide leads a wildlife walk at dusk — wombats, wallabies, pademelons, and if you’re extremely lucky, a Tasmanian devil (guides know the best spots). The guide’s knowledge transforms animal sightings into understanding: the wombat’s cube-shaped droppings (they mark territory on rocks and logs), the devil’s ear color indicating stress level, the platypus detecting electrical signals from prey with its bill. Overnight at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge or similar.

Day 3: Cradle Mountain — Dove Lake & Ancient Forests

Full day exploring Cradle Mountain. Morning: Dove Lake Circuit with your guide — the botany of the alpine zone (fagus — Nothofagus gunnii, Tasmania’s only native deciduous tree, turns brilliant gold in late April — the “Turning of the Fagus” is a Tasmanian autumn pilgrimage), the geology of the dolerite peaks, and the glacial history written in the landscape. Afternoon: choose your adventure — longer walk to Marion’s Lookout (steep but rewarding, with the definitive view of Cradle Mountain, Dove Lake, and the Overland Track) or visit Devils@Cradle sanctuary for an intimate encounter with Tasmanian devils (the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial, with the strongest bite force relative to body size of any mammal). Evening: second wildlife walk, focused on the nocturnal animals. Overnight at Cradle Mountain.

Day 4: Cradle Mountain to Freycinet — East Coast Splendor

Drive across Tasmania (5 hours, with fascinating stops). Morning: Melita Honey Farm (Tasmania’s leatherwood honey is unique — the leatherwood tree grows only in Tasmania’s rainforests, producing a distinctive spicy honey). Midday: Ross (the convict-built sandstone bridge, the Ross Female Factory — one of the few female convict sites — and the bakery claiming to have Australia’s best vanilla slice). Arrive Freycinet National Park by late afternoon. Walk to Wineglass Bay Lookout for sunset — the pink granite Hazards, the white crescent of sand, the turquoise water. Your guide provides champagne and Tasmanian cheese at the lookout. Descend to Wineglass Bay if time permits. Overnight at Freycinet Lodge or Saffire Freycinet (ultra-luxury option).

Day 5: Freycinet to Hobart — Wineglass Bay & Departure

Sunrise optional walk: Cape Tourville Lighthouse (easy boardwalk, spectacular views of the Freycinet coastline and, in season, humpback whales migrating). Final visit to Wineglass Bay or Hazards Beach. Drive to Hobart Airport with a stop at a Tasmanian vineyard for a farewell tasting — Josef Chromy or Frogmore Creek. Depart, carrying the taste of cool-climate wine, the memory of wombats grazing at dusk, and the image of Dove Lake reflecting Cradle Mountain.
