Itinerary Highlights
Days 1-2: Taipei
Two days in Taipei: National Palace Museum (700,000 Chinese art treasures spanning 8,000 years — the collection was evacuated from Beijing’s Forbidden City during the Chinese Civil War, a story worthy of a film), Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Longshan Temple (1738, one of Taiwan’s oldest and most important temples, where you can witness the full range of Chinese folk religious practice), Taipei 101, and the city’s legendary night markets — Shilin (the largest, with over 500 stalls) and Raohe. Overnights in Taipei.
Day 3: Taroko Gorge
Drive the Pacific coast to Taroko National Park. Marble canyon walks, Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, Baiyang Waterfall Trail. Overnight in Hualien.
Day 4: East Rift Valley
Drive south through the East Rift Valley, the fertile corridor between Taiwan’s Central and Coastal mountain ranges. Visit the Farglory Ocean Park or whale watching at Shitiping. Stop at Taitung’s Tiehua Music Village, a creative hub built from old railway warehouses where Taiwan’s indigenous musicians perform. Overnight in Taitung.
Day 5: Kenting — Taiwan’s Tropical Tip
Continue to Kenting National Park at Taiwan’s southernmost tip. Kenting is Taiwan’s tropical playground — white sand beaches, coral reefs, and the iconic Eluanbi Lighthouse (1883) at Taiwan’s southernmost point. Afternoon: snorkeling or diving at the coral reefs, or visit Longpan Park with its dramatic grassland cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Overnight in Kenting.
Day 6: Kaohsiung — The Harbor City
Morning at Kenting. Afternoon drive to Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest port city. Visit the Lotus Pond with its Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum (home to one of the world’s largest sitting Buddha statues and a tooth relic of the Buddha), and the Pier-2 Art Center — a former warehouse district transformed into an open-air art space with massive murals and installations. Overnight in Kaohsiung.
Day 7-8: Alishan & Tea Country
Drive north to Alishan. Two days: forest railway ride, sunset over the sea of clouds, sunrise viewing at Zhushan, tea plantation visits, and walks among the 2,000-year-old sacred cypress trees. Overnights in Alishan area.
Day 9: Sun Moon Lake & Return to Taipei
Morning visit to Sun Moon Lake: cycle the lakeside path, visit Wenwu Temple, boat to Ita Thao aboriginal village. Afternoon drive back to Taipei. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Taipei.
Day 10: Departure
Taipei 101 visit if time allows. Transfer to airport.
