Day 1: Arrive Tirana — The Capital Awakens

Arrive at Tirana International Airport. Private transfer to your hotel in the vibrant capital. Afternoon walking tour of Skanderbeg Square, the heart of Tirana, dominated by the equestrian statue of national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg who held off the Ottoman Empire for 25 years. Visit the National History Museum with its iconic mosaic facade depicting Albanian history from Illyrian times to the communist era. See the Et’hem Bey Mosque (1789), one of the few religious buildings that survived the communist regime’s 1967 ban on religion. Evening: explore Blloku district — once exclusively reserved for the communist elite, now Tirana’s trendiest neighborhood of cafes, bars, and restaurants. Overnight in Tirana.

Day 2: Kruja — The Fortress of Skanderbeg

Morning drive 1 hour to Kruja, the epicenter of Albanian national identity. Visit Kruja Castle (5th century, rebuilt by Skanderbeg in the 15th century), where Skanderbeg and his 3,000 men held off three Ottoman sieges, becoming a legend across Renaissance Europe. The Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle is a stunning Brutalist structure shaped like an Albanian fortress. The Old Bazaar below — a 400-year-old cobblestone market street — still sells traditional Albanian crafts, kilims, antiques, and filigree silver. Afternoon return to Tirana: visit Bunk’Art 2, a massive underground nuclear bunker built for the communist elite, now a museum documenting the Sigurimi secret police’s surveillance and persecution. Overnight in Tirana.

Day 3: Berat — City of a Thousand Windows

Morning drive 2.5 hours to Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Albania’s oldest continuously inhabited cities (traces back to the 6th century BCE). The city sprawls across two hillsides — Mangalem (the Muslim quarter) and Gorica (the Christian quarter) — with Ottoman-era white houses climbing the slopes, their many windows giving Berat its nickname. Visit Berat Castle (Kalaja), still inhabited by locals within its 4th century BCE Illyrian walls — one of the few living castles in Europe. Inside: the Onufri Museum in the Church of St. Mary, displaying breathtaking 16th-century icons by master painter Onufri, who pioneered a unique deep red pigment. Day 4: Gjirokaster — The Stone City

Morning drive 3 hours south to Gjirokaster, another UNESCO gem and the birthplace of writer Ismail Kadare and dictator Enver Hoxha. The “City of Stone” is a perfectly preserved Ottoman town with slate-roofed houses climbing a steep hillside. Visit Gjirokaster Castle, one of the largest in the Balkans, with its eerie Cold War tunnel system and a captured U.S. Air Force T-33 jet — a bizarre propaganda trophy from the paranoid communist era. The castle’s Armaments Museum traces Albanian weapons from Illyrian spears to WWII partisan rifles. Walk the cobblestone Old Bazaar where artisans still work stone and silver. Afternoon: visit Skenduli House, a magnificent 300-year-old Ottoman mansion with carved ceilings, traditional costumes, and blood feud hideout rooms. Overnight in Gjirokaster.

Day 5: The Blue Eye & Albanian Riviera

Morning excursion to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter), a mesmerizing natural spring where crystal-clear water bubbles up from an unknown depth of over 50 meters through a vibrant blue center surrounded by electric turquoise shallows — one of Europe’s most stunning natural phenomena. Continue along the Albanian Riviera — a stretch of the Ionian coast that rivals the Amalfi Coast in beauty but without the crowds. Stop at Porto Palermo Castle, a triangular fortress built by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the early 19th century, perched on a tiny peninsula with turquoise water on three sides. Afternoon: arrive in the coastal town of Saranda, the unofficial capital of the Albanian Riviera. Evening swim at a pristine beach. Overnight in Saranda.

Day 6: Butrint — 2,500 Years of Mediterranean History

Full day at Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Butrint was a Greek colony, a Roman city, a Byzantine bishopric, a Venetian trading post, and an Ottoman outpost — all in one place. Walk through the 3rd-century BCE Greek theater still used for performances, the Roman forum and bathhouses, the 6th-century Byzantine baptistery with its magnificent mosaic floor of peacocks and fish (the largest surviving paleo-Christian baptistery mosaic), the Venetian triangular fortress atop the acropolis, and the Lion Gate with its carved relief of a lion devouring a bull’s head. The site is a microcosm of Mediterranean civilization surrounded by wetlands, mountains, and the Vivari Channel. Afternoon return to Saranda for a final Riviera evening. Overnight in Saranda.

Day 7: Vlora & Return to Tirana

Morning drive north along the Albanian Riviera via the breathtaking Llogara Pass (1,027m), where the road winds through pine forests before revealing a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the entire Ionian coast — the point where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. Stop at Llogara National Park for coffee among the “flag pines” — pine trees permanently bent and sculpted by fierce sea winds into flag-like shapes. Arrive in Vlora, the city where Albanian independence was declared on November 28, 1912. Visit Independence Square and the Monument of Independence. Afternoon drive 2 hours back to Tirana. Farewell dinner at a traditional Albanian restaurant. Overnight in Tirana.
