Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Tirana — Capital Discoveries
Arrive at Tirana International Airport (TIA). Transfer to your hotel in the city center. After settling in, join an afternoon orientation tour of Tirana. Begin at Skanderbeg Square with its equestrian statue of Albania’s national hero. Visit the Et’hem Bey Mosque (completed 1823), which miraculously survived the communist destruction of religious sites in 1967 — locals famously defended it by forming a human chain. The mosque’s interior frescoes depicting landscapes, trees, and buildings are unique in Islamic art. Visit the Bunk’Art 2 museum, a Cold War-era underground bunker beneath the Ministry of Interior transformed into a powerful museum documenting the Sigurimi (secret police) and the persecution of over 6,000 political prisoners during the communist regime. The museum’s concrete tunnels and interrogation rooms offer a visceral window into Albania’s totalitarian past. Evening: welcome dinner in the trendy Blloku district, once forbidden to ordinary citizens. Overnight in Tirana.
Day 2: Tirana to Berat — UNESCO City of a Thousand Windows
Morning drive to Berat (approximately 2 hours), one of Albania’s most magnificent cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Berat’s distinctive Ottoman architecture has earned it UNESCO protection since 2005. Begin at Berat Castle, where people still live within the ancient walls — a living fortress with Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, and homes built into the 2,400-year-old ramparts. Visit the Onufri Museum housed in the Cathedral of St. Mary to see masterpieces by 16th-century icon painter Onufri, famous for his brilliant red pigment. Walk through the Mangalem Quarter, the historic Muslim district where Ottoman-era houses with their characteristic rows of windows cascade steeply down the hillside toward the Osumi River. Cross the 18th-century Gorica Bridge to explore the quieter Gorica Quarter. Afternoon “Raki Experience” — visit a local distillery to learn how Albania’s national spirit is made, taste traditional raki (fruit brandy), and learn about the accompanying meze culture that is central to Albanian social life. Dinner at a traditional restaurant in the historic quarter. Overnight in Berat.
Day 3: Berat to Gjirokaster via Blue Eye — Stone City & Natural Wonder
Depart Berat and journey south into the dramatic landscapes of southern Albania. Stop at the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter), a natural karst spring of extraordinary beauty. The water emerges from a deep hole of unknown depth (divers have reached 50 meters without finding the bottom) at a constant temperature of 10°C/50°F. The intense blue color is created by the light refraction through the deep limestone shaft, with water gushing at 18,400 liters per second. Continue to Gjirokaster, the “City of Stone” and UNESCO World Heritage site. After lunch at a restaurant in the Old Bazaar, explore Gjirokaster Castle, built in the 12th century and expanded by Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha in the 19th century. The castle contains an American T-33 reconnaissance plane — forced to land in 1957 during the Cold War when its pilot got lost, it became a propaganda coup for the communist regime. Walk through the Old Bazaar, a cobblestone street lined with artisan shops where traditional stone carvers still work. Visit the Ethnographic Museum, set in the house that was Enver Hoxha’s birthplace — now a museum illuminating traditional Albanian life. Dinner with live iso-polyphonic singing, Albania’s UNESCO-recognized traditional music. Overnight in Gjirokaster.
Day 4: Gjirokaster to Ksamil via Saranda — Riviera Paradise
Morning: visit the Zekate House, one of Gjirokaster’s finest Ottoman tower houses built in 1811 with a distinctive double-arched facade, ornate carved ceilings, and classic stone roof. Then depart for the coast, arriving in Saranda — the Riviera’s largest town overlooking Corfu. Walk the seaside promenade and visit the ruins of the 5th-century synagogue with its rare mosaic floor, evidence of Saranda’s ancient Jewish community. Continue south to Ksamil, Albania’s tropical paradise. Four tiny islands dot a bay of impossibly turquoise water, creating a scene that rivals the Caribbean. Afternoon free to swim at Ksamil’s white-sand beaches, kayak to the islands, or simply relax under a beach umbrella. The waters are calm, shallow, and perfect for swimming. Lunch at a beachfront restaurant serving the day’s fresh catch. Evening: sunset walk along the beach, followed by dinner at a family-run restaurant known for its organic vegetables and olive oil pressed from the family’s own groves. Overnight near Ksamil.
Day 5: Butrint National Park & Himara Coastal Drive
Morning dedicated to Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean basin. Occupied from at least the 8th century BC, Butrint preserves layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman civilization in a beautiful lakeside forest setting. Walk among the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the well-preserved Greek theater built in the 3rd century BC that could seat 2,500 spectators, the Roman forum and baths, and the magnificent 6th-century Baptistery with its vibrant mosaic floor of birds, animals, and vines — one of the finest early Byzantine mosaics in the Mediterranean. The Venetian fortress crowning the site offers views over the Vivari Channel to Corfu. After Butrint, drive north along the Albanian Riviera, past dramatic cliffs plunging into the Ionian Sea. Stop at Porto Palermo Castle, built by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century — legend says in honor of his wife. Continue to Himara, a charming coastal town. Free evening to swim at Livadh Beach or explore Himara’s Old Town. Overnight in Himara.
Day 6: Dhermi & Llogara Pass — Mountain Meets Sea
Morning visit to Dhermi, one of the Riviera’s most photogenic villages. The Monastery of Saint Mary perched on a hill, whitewashed stone houses, and stunning Dhermi Beach with its distinctive pebble shoreline and crystal-clear water. Then ascend through Llogara National Park via the dramatic Llogara Pass at 1,027 meters. The park is a protected area of pine forests — including the famous “Flag Pine,” a centuries-old pine tree bent by strong winds into the shape of a flag. The views from the pass are breathtaking: the coastline of the Ionian Sea stretching south to Greece, and the Adriatic coast stretching north. Stop at the Llogara viewpoint for a traditional mountain lunch featuring tave kosi (baked lamb with yogurt), grilled vegetables, and fresh mountain cheese. Continue north through Vlore, Albania’s first capital after independence, with its Monument of Independence. Final drive to Tirana. Farewell dinner at a farm-to-table restaurant in the countryside near Tirana, celebrating Albanian organic cuisine. Overnight in Tirana.
Day 7: Tirana Morning & Departure
Morning at leisure. If your flight is in the afternoon, explore the Grand Park of Tirana with its artificial lake, or visit the National Gallery of Arts featuring Albanian artists from the socialist realism period to contemporary works. Pick up last souvenirs: Albanian raki, sage-scented soap, filigree jewelry from Shkodra, or handwoven textiles. Transfer to Tirana International Airport for your departure flight, carrying memories of two UNESCO cities, turquoise beaches, ancient ruins, and the warm hospitality of Southern Albania.
