Day 1: Arrival in Paro — Welcome to the Land of the Thunder Dragon

Your Bhutan adventure begins with one of the world’s most spectacular flight approaches — descending through the Himalayan range with views of Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Bhutan’s own sacred peak Jomolhari (7,326m). Upon landing at Paro International Airport, your English-speaking Bhutanese guide greets you with a traditional Tashi Delek welcome. After checking into your hotel, visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), housed in a 17th-century watchtower that once guarded Paro Dzong. The museum’s collection spans Bhutanese art, thangka paintings, stamps, and natural history exhibits. Evening: stroll through Paro town, with its traditional architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Welcome dinner featuring authentic Bhutanese cuisine — ema datshi (chili cheese), momos (dumplings), and red rice. Overnight in Paro.

Day 2: Paro — The Legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang)

The highlight of any Bhutan journey. After an early breakfast, drive to the base of Taktsang Monastery, the legendary Tiger’s Nest. This awe-inspiring monastery clings to a sheer granite cliff at 3,120 meters (10,240 feet), 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor. Legend says Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century, flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave for three years, three months, three weeks, and three days — giving the monastery its name. The hike takes 4-6 hours round trip: a steady climb through pine forests adorned with prayer flags, with the monastery growing more magnificent with each step. At the cafeteria (2,940m), enjoy tea with breathtaking views. The final 700 steps descend into a gorge and climb back up to the monastery entrance. Inside, explore the eight cave temples including the Pelphu Lhakhang where Guru Rinpoche meditated. Descend in the afternoon. Evening: traditional hot stone bath (Dotsho) at a local farmhouse — river stones heated over a wood fire are dropped into a wooden tub infused with local herbs, the perfect remedy for tired muscles. Day 3: Paro to Thimphu — The Capital City

After breakfast, drive to Thimphu (approximately 1.5 hours, 55km), Bhutan’s charming capital and the only capital city in the world without traffic lights. En route, visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple built by Thangtong Gyalpo, the “Iron Bridge Builder” saint. In Thimphu, begin at the Memorial Chorten, built in 1974 in memory of the Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. This whitewashed stupa with golden spires is the spiritual heart of Thimphu, where elderly Bhutanese circumambulate while turning prayer wheels. Continue to the colossal Buddha Dordenma statue at Kuensel Phodrang — one of the largest Buddha statues in the world at 51.5 meters (169 feet), made of bronze and gilded in gold, housing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues inside. The statue overlooks the entire Thimphu Valley. Visit the Tashichho Dzong, the “Fortress of the Glorious Religion,” which serves as the seat of Bhutan’s government and the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). This magnificent fortress-monastery, with its golden tapering roofs and intricate woodwork, is especially beautiful at dusk. Evening: explore Thimphu’s weekend market (if timing permits) or Norzin Lam, the main street lined with handicraft shops. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 4: Thimphu to Punakha — The Most Beautiful Dzong

Morning: visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (National Institute of Arts & Crafts), where students undergo rigorous six-year training in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts — from thangka painting and wood carving to embroidery and sculpture. Then drive to Punakha via the Dochula Pass (3,100m / 10,170ft). On a clear day, the pass offers a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the eastern Himalayan snow-capped peaks. The pass is marked by 108 chortens (Druk Wangyal Khang Zhang Chortens), built to honor Bhutanese soldiers who died in a 2003 military operation. The chortens create an ethereal landscape against the mountain backdrop. Descend through forests of rhododendron and oak into the subtropical Punakha Valley. Afternoon: visit Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang), the “Palace of Great Happiness.” Built in 1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River), this is widely considered Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress. Its towering whitewashed walls, intricately carved wooden galleries, and three courtyards make it an architectural masterpiece. The dzong houses the sacred Rangjung Kharsapani (the preserved body of Zhabdrung) and is the winter residence of the monastic body. Evening: walk across the traditional cantilever bridge spanning the Mo Chhu. Overnight in Punakha.

Day 5: Punakha to Phobjikha Valley — The Glacial Valley

Morning: short hike to Chimi Lhakhang, the “Temple of Fertility,” dedicated to the eccentric 15th-century Divine Madman Drukpa Kunley. The temple is known for blessing couples seeking children — its phallic symbols, meant to ward off evil, are a unique aspect of Bhutanese folk culture. Continue east to Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey), a stunning U-shaped glacial valley at 3,000 meters. This pristine wetland is the winter home (November-March) of the endangered black-necked cranes (Grus nigricollis), which migrate from the Tibetan Plateau across the Himalayas. Bhutanese people revere these majestic birds, believing them to be reincarnations of Buddhist lamas, and celebrate their arrival with the annual Black-Necked Crane Festival. Visit the Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa), a 17th-century Nyingmapa Buddhist monastery dramatically perched on a ridge overlooking the valley. The monastery is one of the oldest in Bhutan and serves as the spiritual center for the region. In the evening, visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre to learn about conservation efforts. Optional: nature walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, offering panoramic views of the valley. Overnight at a traditional farmhouse stay in Phobjikha.

Day 6: Phobjikha to Paro — Departure

Early morning: optional crane viewing (in season) from the observation hides. After breakfast, begin the scenic drive back to Paro (approximately 6 hours), traversing mountain passes and river valleys. En route, stop at Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, dramatically situated on a ridge overlooking the Punatsangchhu and Dangchhu rivers. The 17th-century fortress was tragically destroyed by fire in 2012 and has been meticulously reconstructed using traditional techniques. Lunch en route. Arrive at Paro International Airport for your departure flight. As your Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines flight ascends, catch a final glimpse of the Himalayas — Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and the sacred peaks that guard the Kingdom of Bhutan.
