Day 1: Arrive Prishtina — Europe’s Youngest Capital

Arrive Prishtina International Airport. Private transfer to your hotel. Afternoon walking tour of Kosovo’s energetic capital. Start at the NEWBORN monument — the iconic sculpture unveiled on February 17, 2008, the day Kosovo declared independence, repainted each year with a new theme. Walk the Mother Teresa Boulevard, named for the Albanian-born saint whose parents were from this region. Visit the National Library — one of the world’s most bizarre buildings, a Brutalist masterpiece covered in 99 domes wrapped in aluminum netting, simultaneously voted one of the world’s ugliest and most beautiful buildings. See the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa and the elegant Ottoman-era Imperial Mosque (1461). Evening: Prishtina’s cafe culture — the city has one of the highest densities of cafes per capita in Europe. Overnight in Prishtina.

Day 2: Prishtina — History & Ethnography

Morning visit to the Kosovo Museum, tracing the region’s history from Neolithic times through Illyrian and Dardanian kingdoms to modern Kosovo. The Goddess on the Throne — a 6,000-year-old terracotta figurine discovered near Prishtina — is the museum’s star artifact and Kosovo’s cultural symbol. Next: the Ethnological Museum (Emin Gjiku Complex), a beautifully preserved 18th-century Ottoman house complex with rooms furnished exactly as they would have been in the 19th century. Afternoon: visit the Marble Cave (Shpella e Gadimes), a stunning karst cave discovered in 1969 with rare aragonite crystal formations. Evening: visit the Bill Clinton Boulevard and the 3-meter-tall statue of the former U.S. president, reflecting Kosovo’s strong pro-American sentiment. Overnight in Prishtina.

Day 3: Gracanica Monastery & Pristina to Prizren

Morning excursion to Gracanica Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage), a masterpiece of Serbian-Byzantine architecture built in 1321 by King Stefan Milutin. The interior is covered in extraordinary 14th-century frescoes — the Last Judgment, the Dormition of the Virgin, and portraits of the Nemanjic dynasty in astonishing preservation despite centuries of Ottoman rule. Afternoon drive 1 hour to Prizren, Kosovo’s cultural capital and arguably the most beautiful city in the country. Check into a restored Ottoman-era guesthouse in the Old Town. Evening walk along the Lumbardhi River past the 15th-century Stone Bridge and the Sinan Pasha Mosque (1615), whose minaret dominates the skyline. Overnight in Prizren.

Day 4: Prizren — The Cultural Capital

Full day exploring Prizren. Morning climb to Prizren Fortress (Kalaja), a Byzantine-era castle expanded by Serbian kings and Ottoman governors, offering a panoramic view of the entire city — minarets, red-tile roofs, the Sharr Mountains rising behind. Visit the UNESCO-listed Our Lady of Ljevis Church (14th century), a testament to Kosovo’s layered religious heritage. Explore the League of Prizren Museum, where, in 1878, Albanian leaders assembled to form the first modern Albanian national movement. Afternoon: the Hamam Museum (16th century Ottoman bathhouse) and the Bajrakli Mosque (1566) with its exquisite painted interior. Walk the Shadervan — Prizren’s main square, ringed with cafes beneath ancient plane trees. Evening: sample Prizren’s famous “Prizrenski kebab” at a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Prizren.

Day 5: Rahovec Wine Region & Gjakova

Morning drive through the Rahovec (Orahovac) wine region — Kosovo’s primary wine-producing area with a tradition dating back 2,000 years to Roman times. Visit a family-owned winery for a tasting of Vranac (a bold red native to the Balkans) and local white varieties. Continue to Gjakova, once the most important trading center in Kosovo. The Grand Bazaar (Carshia e Madhe), reconstructed after the 1999 war, is one of the oldest and longest (1 km) covered bazaars in the Balkans. Visit the Hadum Mosque (1594) and the extraordinary ethnographic museum housed in a traditional mansion. Overnight in Gjakova.

Day 6: Peja & Rugova Canyon — Kosovo’s Natural Masterpiece

Morning drive 1 hour to Peja (Pec), gateway to the Accursed Mountains. Visit the Patriarchate of Pec Monastery (UNESCO), a 13th-century spiritual center with vivid frescoes of the Nemanjic dynasty, set in a serene gorge. Continue into Rugova Canyon — one of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes, a 25km gorge with vertical limestone walls rising 1,000 meters. The canyon was carved by the Lumbardhi River and offers some of the finest hiking and via ferrata in the Balkans. Afternoon hike along the canyon rim (moderate, 2-3 hours) with views that rival the Dolomites. Visit the Patriarchate Waterfall near the canyon entrance. Evening: enjoy flija — Kosovo’s signature layered crepe-and-cream dish, traditionally cooked outdoors over coals for hours. Overnight in a mountain guesthouse in Rugova.

Day 7: Decani Monastery & Return to Prishtina

Morning visit to Visoki Decani Monastery (UNESCO), one of the most significant medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries, built 1327-1335. Its Romanesque-Gothic architecture — unique in the Orthodox world — and the extraordinary cycle of frescoes (over 1,000 compositions) covering over 4,000 square meters make it one of the best-preserved medieval art ensembles in Europe. Note: the monastery is protected by NATO KFOR troops; passports are required for entry. Afternoon drive back to Prishtina. Final exploration: the curious “Oxford Dictionary Street” named for English words (Hope, Love, Peace) painted on apartment blocks — a quirky piece of post-war reconstruction. Farewell dinner at a traditional Albanian-Kosovar restaurant. Overnight in Prishtina.

Day 8: Departure
