Itinerary Highlights
Days 1-8: Ushuaia & South Georgia
Depart Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Sail across the Scotia Sea to South Georgia. Spend 4 days exploring the island’s extraordinary wildlife: 100,000+ king penguin colonies, beaches covered in elephant seals, and wandering albatross with 3.5m wingspans. Visit Grytviken whaling station and Shackleton’s grave. Hike sections of Shackleton’s crossing route.
Days 9-16: Tristan da Cunha Archipelago
Extended time in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago (weather permitting). Multiple landing attempts at Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, plus boat cruises around Nightingale Island (rockhopper penguins, millions of seabirds) and Inaccessible Island (UNESCO World Heritage, pristine ecosystem). This extended stay dramatically improves your chances of landing at Tristan — the most weather-dependent port call in the world. Time ashore includes the potato patches, volcano hiking, and the community hall where you can buy handicrafts made by the 250 islanders. The Albatross Bar serves Tristan lobster and the island’s unique atmosphere of extreme isolation.
Days 17-23: Saint Helena — Deep Exploration
Extended time at St. Helena (weather-dependent). Beyond Longwood House and Napoleon’s tomb, explore Sandy Bay’s volcanic beaches, Diana’s Peak National Park (endemic cloud forest at 823m), and the Heart-Shaped Waterfall. Visit Plantation House to meet Jonathan the tortoise (hatched ~1832). Time to absorb the unique Saint culture — a blend of British, African, Chinese, and Indian influences developed in complete isolation over 500 years.
Days 24-31: Ascension Island & Cape Verde
Continue north to Ascension Island (extended itinerary only). This volcanic island is both a British military base and one of the most important green turtle nesting sites in the Atlantic. Visit the BBC relay station, the NASA tracking station (used during Apollo missions), and the extraordinary Green Mountain — a cloud forest ecosystem created by the Royal Navy in the 19th century, proving that ecological transformation on barren volcanic islands is possible. Continue to Cape Verde for final landings at the volcanic archipelago. Overnights: expedition ship.
Days 32-34: Cape Verde & Voyage End
Disembark in Cape Verde. The tropical volcanic archipelago, with its Portuguese-African Creole culture, música mornas, and dramatic landscapes, is a fitting end to this grand South Atlantic crossing. Transfer to airport for flights home.
