Day 1: Arrive Phnom Penh — The Mekong Capital

Arrive Phnom Penh. Afternoon city orientation: Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum. Evening riverside walk and welcome dinner at a Mekong-view restaurant. Overnight in Phnom Penh.

Day 2: Phnom Penh — History and Hope

Full day in Phnom Penh. Visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21) and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek — confronting Cambodia’s tragic past is essential to understanding its present. Afternoon: explore the Russian Market (Psar Toul Tom Poung) — the best place for souvenirs, from silk scarves to carved Buddha statues. Visit Wat Phnom and the Central Market (Psar Thmei). Evening: sunset cruise on the Mekong River — watch the sun sink behind the Royal Palace’s golden spires while fishing boats glide past. Overnight in Phnom Penh.

Day 3: Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham — The River Road

Morning drive north along the Mekong River (2.5 hours) to Kampong Cham, a charming provincial capital. Visit Wat Nokor Bachey — a unique 11th-century Angkorian temple with a modern Buddhist pagoda built inside its ruins. The contrast between the ancient sandstone and the brightly painted contemporary temple is a perfect metaphor for Cambodia — the ancient and modern coexisting. Continue to Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei (Man Hill and Woman Hill) — two small hills with temples, connected by a legend: teams of men and women competed to build a temple in one night; the women hung a lantern to trick the men’s roosters into crowing early, and the men’s unfinished temple still stands. Visit a rubber plantation — Cambodia’s eastern provinces are covered in rubber trees, a legacy of French colonial agriculture that remains an important industry. Overnight in Kampong Cham.

Day 4: Kampong Cham to Siem Reap — Silk Island & Ancient Bridges

Morning: take a local ferry across the Mekong to Koh Paen (Silk Island) — a rural island where silk weaving has been practiced for centuries. Visit a family workshop to see the entire process: silkworm cocoons boiled, silk thread reeled onto bobbins, dyed in natural colors (indigo, turmeric, rust), and woven on handlooms into the intricate patterns of Khmer silk (hol — the Cambodian equivalent of ikat, where threads are tie-dyed before weaving to create the pattern). Continue by road to Siem Reap (approximately 4 hours), stopping at the Spean Praptos (Kompong Kdei Bridge) — a 12th-century Angkorian bridge built during Jayavarman VII’s reign, 85m long with 22 arches, still in use today. It’s one of the longest corbelled stone arch bridges in the world, a reminder that the Angkorian road network once connected the empire from southern Laos to the Gulf of Thailand. Arrive Siem Reap by late afternoon. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 5: Angkor Wat Sunrise & Grand Circuit

Pre-dawn departure for Angkor Wat sunrise. Full temple day: Angkor Wat galleries and Bakan, Angkor Thom (Bayon faces, Terrace of Elephants, Terrace of the Leper King), and the Grand Circuit — Preah Khan, Neak Pean (a small temple in the center of Jayatataka reservoir, with four pools representing the four sacred rivers of Hindu/Buddhist cosmology — the Ganges, Indus, Yamuna, and Brahmaputra — and a central sanctuary on an island, designed as a healing center where pilgrims bathed in the waters believed to have curative properties), Ta Som, and East Mebon. Day 6: Banteay Srei, Ta Prohm & Apsara Evening

Morning: Banteay Srei (“Citadel of Women”), the pink sandstone jewel of Khmer art. Visit the Cambodia Landmine Museum. Afternoon: Ta Prohm, the jungle temple immortalized in “Tomb Raider” — explore its haunting corridors where ancient stone and ancient trees become one. Evening: Farewell dinner with Apsara classical dance performance — the royal ballet of the Khmer court. Overnight in Siem Reap.

Day 7: Floating Village Morning — Departure

Morning boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake: visit the floating village of Chong Kneas or Kampong Khleang, depending on water levels. Kampong Khleang is the largest community on the lake — approximately 10,000 people living in houses on 10m-high stilts. During the dry season (December-May), you walk through the “village floor” beneath the houses; during the wet season, you float at first-floor level. The village has its own floating school, floating church, floating basketball court, and floating pig pens. Return to Siem Reap by midday. Afternoon transfer to the airport for your departure — wiser, humbled, and enriched by the Kingdom of Wonder.
