Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Bangui to the River
Arrive Bangui. Afternoon city tour: the Boganda Museum, Notre-Dame of Bangui Cathedral, and the central market. Evening briefing on the river expedition. Overnight in Bangui.
Day 2: Pirogue Journey Begins
Drive to the put-in point on the Sangha River, one of the Congo Basin’s great waterways. Board traditional wooden pirogues (motorized for safety) and begin the journey downstream. The Sangha flows through some of Africa’s most intact rainforest — the river is the highway, and the forest walls on either side are alive with birds, monkeys, and the occasional elephant at the water’s edge. Stop at Bantu fishing villages along the way to learn about traditional fishing techniques using woven traps. Camp on a sandbar island at sunset — the stars in the Congo Basin, with zero light pollution, are overwhelming. Overnight: riverside tent camp.
Day 3: River Life & BaAka Villages
Continue downstream, stopping at BaAka settlements. Visit a remote village where the pace of life follows the river’s rhythms — fishing, cassava farming, and forest gathering. Participate in a fishing demonstration: the BaAka use plant-derived toxins to temporarily stun fish in small forest streams (completely safe for humans, traditional and sustainable). Afternoon: continue to a second camp near Bayanga. Evening campfire with river sounds — the splash of hippos and the distant whoop of chimpanzees. Overnight: riverside tent camp.
Day 4: Bayanga & Dzanga-Sangha Forest
Morning arrival in Bayanga. Forest walk in Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve with BaAka trackers: look for forest elephants, red colobus monkeys, and the enormous Goliath tigerfish in the rivers. Visit the Dzanga Bai viewing platform if timing permits. Afternoon: visit a BaAka village to experience polyphonic singing. Overnight in Bayanga guesthouse.
Day 5: Return to Bangui & Depart
Charter flight from Bayanga to Bangui. Transfer to airport.
