Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive São Vicente — Mindelo
Arrive at Cesária Évora Airport. Transfer to Kira’s Boutique Hotel in Mindelo. Afternoon walking tour: Mercado Municipal with its vibrant displays of tropical fruits and fresh tuna, Cesária Évora’s former home, the replica of Lisbon’s Belém Tower. Evening: dinner at a local restaurant with live morna music.
Day 2: São Vicente Explorer
Full-day exploration of São Vicente. Drive to Monte Verde (750m) for panoramic views of the entire island. Visit Baía das Gatas — natural pools where a famous annual music festival takes place. Lunch in Calhau, a fishing village. Visit Salamansa village and its artisanal fishing community. Overnight at Kira’s Boutique Hotel.
Day 3: Ferry to Santo Antão — Paul Valley
Morning ferry (1 hour) to Santo Antão. The approach reveals the island’s staggering green cliffs and terraced valleys. Drive through the old road to Paul Valley — one of the world’s most dramatic valleys, where sugar cane, banana, mango, and coffee grow on impossibly steep terraces. Visit a traditional grogue distillery. Overnight at Casa das Ilhas.
Day 4: Cova Crater & Ribeira Grande
Morning ascent to Cova crater (1,170m), an extinct volcanic crater now farmed. Begin hiking the Cova-to-Paul Valley trail, descending through pine forest, eucalyptus groves, and terraced agricultural land. Lunch in Ribeira Grande. Afternoon: visit Ponta do Sol, a colorful town clinging to the northern coast. Walk through the old district with its Portuguese colonial architecture. Overnight at Casa das Ilhas.
Day 5: Northern Coast & Return to São Vicente
Morning drive along the spectacular northern coastal road. Visit Cruzinha and the dramatic coastal cliffs. Picnic lunch overlooking the Atlantic. Ferry back to São Vicente. Farewell dinner at Mindelo’s waterfront. Overnight at Kira’s.
Day 6: Departure
Morning at leisure in Mindelo — last chance for souvenirs and grogue. Transfer to airport.
