Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in São Vicente (Mindelo)

Arrive at Cesária Évora International Airport (VXE) on São Vicente and transfer to your hotel in Mindelo, the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Named after the legendary “Barefoot Diva” of morna music, Mindelo is a vibrant port city of cobblestone streets, colorful colonial architecture, and a lively arts scene. After settling in, take a walking tour through the city center: visit the replica of Lisbon’s Belém Tower, the Palácio do Povo, and the bustling fish market. In the evening, head to a local bar in the historic center to experience live morna and coladeira music — the soul of Cape Verdean culture. Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 2 — Ferry to Santo Antão & Paul Valley

After an early breakfast, board the ferry for the one-hour crossing from São Vicente to Santo Antão. As the ferry approaches Porto Novo, the sheer scale of Santo Antão’s mountains rising straight from the sea is breathtaking. Upon arrival, meet your trekking guide and drive along the spectacular coastal road to the Paul Valley. This deep, fertile valley is a riot of tropical green: sugarcane fields, banana plantations, mango trees, and terraced plots climbing impossibly steep slopes. After settling into your guesthouse, take an introductory afternoon walk along the valley floor, visiting the village of Paul and learning about the traditional agricultural practices that sustain this community. Day 3 — Santo Antão: Paúl Volcano Crater Hike

Today’s challenging hike takes you from the Paul Valley floor up to the rim of the ancient Paúl Volcano Crater. The trail ascends through terraced farmland, eucalyptus groves, and endemic vegetation, gaining approximately 800 meters in elevation. The panoramic reward at the crater rim is unforgettable: the entire Paul Valley spread out below, the Atlantic Ocean on two sides, and the jagged peaks of the island’s interior stretching to the horizon. After a picnic lunch at the crater viewpoint, descend via a different trail through the villages of Cabo da Ribeira and into the neighboring valley. Total hiking time: 5–6 hours. Day 4 — Santo Antão: Cova Crater to Ribeira Grande

Transfer by vehicle to the Cova Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera at 1,170 meters that has been transformed into a fertile agricultural basin by generations of farmers. Walk the crater rim before beginning your spectacular descent into the Ribeira Grande Valley. This is the classic Santo Antão hike: a gradual descent along a well-maintained cobblestone trail through some of the island’s most dramatic scenery — sheer rock walls, terraced slopes growing coffee and oranges, tiny villages clinging to mountainsides, and the deep gorge of Ribeira Grande far below. The trail passes through the village of Delgadim before reaching the valley floor. Total hiking time: 4–5 hours. Overnight in Ribeira Grande or Ponta do Sol.

Day 5 — Santo Antão: Coastal Trails & Northern Villages

Today explores Santo Antão’s rugged northern coastline. Drive to the village of Cruzinha and begin a coastal trek that follows ancient paths linking fishing communities. The trail offers dramatic views of the Atlantic crashing against volcanic cliffs, with the islands of São Vicente and Santa Luzia visible on the horizon. Pass through the villages of Formiguinhas and Corvo before reaching Fontainhas, one of the most photogenic villages in Cape Verde, perched precariously on a narrow ridge with dizzying drops on both sides. This relatively gentle hike (3–4 hours) provides a perfect contrast to the mountain treks of previous days. Overnight in Ponta do Sol or Ribeira Grande.

Day 6 — Return Ferry to São Vicente & Mindelo Exploration

After a relaxed morning, take the midday ferry back to São Vicente. Upon arrival in Mindelo, the afternoon is yours to explore further. Visit the Cesária Évora Museum, dedicated to Cape Verde’s most famous musical export, housed in her former home. Browse the artisanal market for traditional panu di terra textiles and local crafts. Climb to Fortim d’El Rei for panoramic views over Mindelo Bay and Monte Cara, the mountain whose profile resembles a human face. In the evening, savor a farewell dinner at one of Mindelo’s excellent waterfront restaurants. Overnight in Mindelo.

Day 7 — Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Cesária Évora International Airport for your departure flight. Leave Cape Verde with tired legs, a full heart, and memories of Santo Antão’s green valleys, towering peaks, and the musical spirit of Mindelo.
