Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Ashgabat — The White Marble City
Arrive in Ashgabat, one of the world’s most surreal capitals. The city holds the Guinness World Record for the highest density of white marble buildings — over 540 structures clad in pristine white marble. Afternoon tour: the Independence Monument, the Neutrality Arch (the golden statue of former President Niyazov that rotates to face the sun), and the epic Ertugrul Gazi Mosque. Evening: watch the sunset illuminate the marble skyline from Kopetdag Mountain foothills.
Day 2: Ashgabat — City of Records
Full-day exploration of Ashgabat. Visit the Turkmenistan National Museum, the Russian Bazaar (Tolkuchka), and the magnificent Akhal-Teke horse stables — the legendary “Heavenly Horses” with their metallic golden coats. Then the Alem Cultural and Entertainment Center, home to the world’s largest indoor Ferris wheel (another Guinness record). Evening stroll along the Ylham (Inspiration) Park with its bizarre golden statues.
Day 3: Darvaza — The Door to Hell
The highlight of any Turkmenistan journey. Drive through the Karakum Desert to the Darvaza Gas Crater, known worldwide as the “Door to Hell.” In 1971, Soviet geologists drilling for gas accidentally punctured an underground cavern, causing the ground to collapse into a 69-meter-wide, 30-meter-deep crater. To prevent the spread of methane, they set it on fire — expecting it to burn for weeks. Over 50 years later, it’s still burning. Arrive at dusk as the flames become visible against the darkening sky. Camp overnight in traditional yurts near the crater. Dinner cooked over the heat of the Earth itself. Lie under the Karakum’s incredible star-filled sky with the crater’s orange glow flickering on the horizon.
Day 4: Darvaza Morning & Kunya-Urgench
Dawn at the Door to Hell — watching the sun rise while the gas crater burns is an experience unlike any other. Drive to Kunya-Urgench, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was the capital of the Khorezm Empire in the 12th century and one of the Islamic world’s greatest cities before Genghis Khan destroyed it. Visit the 60-meter Kutlug Timur Minaret — the tallest minaret in Central Asia — and the stunning turquoise-domed Turabek Khanum Mausoleum with its 365-section ceiling mosaic representing the days of the year. Overnight in Dashoguz.
Day 5: Yangikala Canyons & Caspian Coast
Drive west to the Yangikala Canyons, Turkmenistan’s answer to the Grand Canyon but with a twist — the rock walls are striped in pink, red, orange, cream, and white layers that look painted by a surrealist artist. These 100-meter cliffs were once the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean. Continue to Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea coast. Overnight in Turkmenbashi.
Day 6: Kov-Ata Underground Lake & Nohur Village
Visit Kov-Ata (Father of Caves), a natural underground lake in a limestone cave 60 meters below ground. The thermal water maintains 33-37°C year-round, rich in 38 minerals, and a swim in its turquoise depths feels like time travel. Continue to Nohur, a mountain village in the Kopetdag where residents claim descent from Alexander the Great’s soldiers. Visit a traditional silk-weaving workshop. Overnight in Nohur home-stay.
Day 7: Merv — Queen of the World
Fly to Mary and drive to Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important cities on the Silk Road. At its peak in the 12th century, Merv was possibly the largest city in the world with 500,000 inhabitants. Explore the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum (a Seljuk masterpiece), the enigmatic corrugated walls of the Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala (mysterious “castles”), and the sprawling Erk Kala citadel. Over 4,000 years of history are layered in these desert ruins. Fly back to Ashgabat. Farewell dinner at an Ashgabat restaurant.
Day 8: Departure
Final morning in Ashgabat. Visit Gulistan (Russian) Bazaar for last-minute Turkmen carpets, silk scarves, and Akhal-Teke horse souvenirs. Transfer to airport.
