Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Dushanbe — Capital of the Pamirs
Arrive in Dushanbe, Tajikistan’s leafy capital against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Visit the National Museum with its famous 13m-long reclining Buddha — the largest in Central Asia, evidence of Buddhism’s reach along the Silk Road. Walk Rudaki Park and see the world’s tallest flagpole (165m). Welcome dinner of plov (Tajik pilaf) and shurbo (lamb soup). Overnight in Dushanbe.
Day 2: Dushanbe to Khorog — The Pamir Begins
Full-day drive (or flight) to Khorog along the Afghan border — the Panj River forms the boundary, so Afghanistan is literally a stone’s throw away. Stop at small villages, watch life across the river in Afghan Badakhshan, and begin the ascent into the Pamir Mountains. Khorog is the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region and the gateway to the Pamir. Visit the botanical garden — the second-highest in the world (2,200m). Overnight at a Pamiri guesthouse in Khorog.
Day 3: Wakhan Corridor — The Afghanistan Frontier
Drive the legendary Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of Tajikistan wedged between the Pamirs and the Hindu Kush, with Afghanistan’s Wakhan to your left the entire way. The views are staggering: the 6,700m peaks of the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan mirrored in the Panj River. Visit Yamchun Fort (3rd century BC), a Silk Road citadel perched 300m above the valley. Soak in the Bibi Fatima hot springs, used for millennia. Visit the Buddhist stupa at Vrang, evidence of this valley’s role as a Silk Road branch. Overnight at a Pamiri guesthouse in Ishkashim.
Day 4: Langar & Petroglyphs
Drive deeper into the Wakhan, past ancient petroglyphs etched into rocks by Silk Road travelers 5,000 years ago — images of ibex, Marco Polo sheep, and caravans. Reach Langar, the last village in the Wakhan, at the foot of the 6,726m Karl Marx Peak. Hike to the petroglyph site above the village with views of the Hindu Kush and the Pamir River. Overnight at a Pamiri guesthouse in Langar.
Day 5: Pamir Highway — The Roof of the World
The epic day on the M41 Pamir Highway, one of the world’s greatest road journeys. Drive from Langar to Murghab at an average altitude above 4,000m. Cross the Khargush Pass (4,344m) with views of the Wakhan and Afghanistan stretching to the south. The landscape transforms into the high-altitude desert of the Eastern Pamir — vast, empty, and breathtakingly beautiful. Reach Murghab, the highest town in the former Soviet Union (3,650m). Overnight at a guesthouse in Murghab.
Day 6: Karakul Lake — Meteorite Blue
Drive to Karakul Lake (3,914m), a meteorite impact crater lake 25km in diameter — one of the highest large lakes in the world. The deep blue of the water against the surrounding 7,000m peaks (Lenin Peak, 7,134m, visible across the border in Kyrgyzstan) is otherworldly. Walk the shoreline, meet Kyrgyz herders who bring their yaks and yurts here in summer, and feel the thin air at nearly 4,000m. Overnight in a yurt camp by Karakul Lake.
Day 7: Ak-Baital Pass — The Highest Point
Cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4,655m), the highest point on the Pamir Highway and one of the highest paved passes in the world. The oxygen is 60% of sea level — take it slow and savor the achievement. Descend into the Alay Valley. Overnight at a guesthouse in Sary-Tash.
Day 8: Return to Dushanbe
Drive or fly back to Dushanbe (this is a long day by road; flights from Murghab are seasonal). Afternoon at leisure in Dushanbe. Overnight in Dushanbe.
Day 9: Dushanbe Culture Day
Full day exploring Dushanbe: the grandiose Palace of Nations, the Ismaili Centre (one of Central Asia’s most beautiful modern buildings), the Mehrgon Bazaar for spices and dried fruits, and a somoni-making (flatbread) demonstration. Farewell dinner at a chaikhana. Overnight in Dushanbe.
Day 10: Depart Dushanbe
Transfer to airport.
