Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Longyearbyen — Welcome to the High Arctic
Arrive in Longyearbyen at 78°N, the world’s northernmost town. Transfer to your premium expedition vessel — the M/V Sea Spirit or similar ice-strengthened ship. Settle into your comfortable cabin with ocean views. Welcome reception with champagne, captain’s welcome, and safety briefing. As the ship departs Isfjord, watch the Arctic landscape unfold under the midnight sun. First wildlife briefing from your expedition naturalists.
Day 2: Northwest Spitsbergen National Park — Kongsfjord
Enter the spectacular Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. Zodiac cruise through Kongsfjord to the face of Kronebreen, one of Svalbard’s fastest-moving glaciers. Visit Ny-Ålesund, the northernmost permanent civilian settlement. Walk among the colorful research station buildings where scientists from around the world study Arctic climate change. See the historic airship mooring mast. Post-dinner lecture: “The History of Arctic Exploration.”
Day 3: Liefdefjord — Monaco Glacier
The magnificent Monaco Glacier — 5km wide and towering 60m above the sea. Extended Zodiac cruising along the glacier front for photography of the blue ice and calving events. This coastline is among Svalbard’s best for polar bear sightings. Naturalists on the bridge 24/7 to spot wildlife. Afternoon lecture: “Polar Bears — Lords of the Arctic.”
Day 4 & 5: Nordvest-Spitsbergen — Wilderness Exploration
Two full days of flexible expedition cruising in the pristine wilderness northwest of Spitsbergen. The exact route depends on ice conditions and wildlife — the expedition leader makes real-time decisions to maximize wildlife encounters. Possible landings at: Moffen Island (walrus sanctuary), Woodfjord (polar bear territory), and Raudfjord (dramatic glaciers). Arctic flora walk on the tundra: Svalbard poppies, purple saxifrage, and the tiny polar willow. Lecture: “Arctic Birds of Svalbard.”
Day 6 & 7: Nordre Isfjord & Bellsund — History & Belugas
Two days exploring the southern reaches of the Spitsbergen coast. Visit Bellsund’s historical whaling stations from the 17th-century Dutch and English whaling era — well-preserved blubber ovens and gravesites. Cruise into Van Mijenfjord, a long fjord often filled with brash ice, excellent for seal and polar bear sightings. Visit the Russian mining settlement of Barentsburg (population ~400) — a living Soviet-era time capsule with a Lenin statue, cultural center, and the northernmost Russian Orthodox church.
Day 8: Hornsund — The Jewel of South Spitsbergen
The grand finale: Hornsund, Svalbard’s most dramatic fjord system. Jagged mountain peaks rise directly from the sea, resembling Patagonia or Antarctica. The Hornsundtind massif towers at 1,431m. Zodiac cruise past multiple glacier fronts, each with a distinct character. Final intensive scanning for polar bears, Arctic foxes, and whale species including blue, fin, and minke. Farewell captain’s dinner celebrating the expedition.
Day 9: Longyearbyen — Farewell to the Arctic
Morning arrival in Longyearbyen. Breakfast on board before disembarkation. Optional post-cruise activities: Svalbard Museum, dog kennel visit, or last-minute Arctic shopping. Transfer to the airport for your flight south, carrying memories of glaciers, polar bears, and the extraordinary beauty of the High Arctic.
