Day 1: Longyearbyen — The World’s Northernmost Town

Fly into Longyearbyen Airport (LYR) at 78°N — the world’s northernmost commercial airport. Longyearbyen, population 2,400, is a frontier town of colorful houses against a stark Arctic backdrop, surrounded by mountains and glaciers. This is a place where carrying a rifle outside town is mandatory (polar bear territory) and the sun doesn’t set from April 20 to August 22. Meet your expedition team — the captain, naturalists, polar historians, and Zodiac drivers who will be your guides for the coming week. Board your expedition vessel, settle into your cabin, attend the mandatory safety briefing, and sail out through Isfjorden as the midnight sun illuminates the surrounding peaks. Overnight aboard.

Day 2: Kongsfjorden & Ny-Alesund — Science at the Top of the World

Sail north into Kongsfjorden, one of Svalbard’s most beautiful fjords, flanked by glaciers and towering peaks. Morning Zodiac landing at Ny-Alesund (78°55’N), the world’s northernmost permanent settlement. Ny-Alesund is an international research station where scientists from over 10 countries study climate change, Arctic biology, and atmospheric physics. Visit the Amundsen monument — it was from here that Roald Amundsen launched his 1926 airship Norge expedition, becoming the first to verifiably reach the North Pole. The town’s post office is the world’s northernmost. Continue cruising along the Kongsvegen glacier front — a 25km wall of ice — with Zodiac excursions for close-up views of the calving. Overnight aboard, sailing ever northward.

Day 3-4: The Ice Edge — Into the Polar Bear Kingdom

The expedition’s rhythm now follows the ice. Your captain navigates to the edge of the Arctic pack ice — the floating sea ice that defines the High Arctic ecosystem. This is polar bear country, and the expedition team maintains 24-hour wildlife watch. The first sighting: a cream-colored shape on the ice, moving with that distinctive rolling gait — Ursus maritimus, the polar bear, king of the Arctic. Your ship approaches slowly, maintaining a respectful distance, while you watch through binoculars from the deck or a Zodiac at safe range. A mother with cubs, a lone male on an ice floe, pawing at a seal’s breathing hole — each encounter is unique and unpredictable. The pack ice is also home to walruses hauled out on floes, bearded seals, and ivory gulls — the only bird that spends its entire life in the High Arctic. The 24-hour daylight means wildlife watching continues around the clock. Two full days of ice-edge exploration. Overnight aboard.

Day 5: Hinlopen Strait & Alkefjellet — 60,000 Seabirds

Enter Hinlopen Strait, the narrow channel between Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. The highlight is Alkefjellet — a 100-meter-high basalt cliff rising directly from the sea, home to approximately 60,000 breeding pairs of Brunnich’s guillemots (thick-billed murres). The sight and sound of this seabird city is overwhelming — the air thick with birds, the cliffs white with droppings, the noise a constant roar of calls. Glaucous gulls and Arctic foxes patrol the base of the cliffs, picking off the unwary. Zodiac cruise along the cliff base for extraordinary photography. Afternoon: attempt a landing on Nordaustlandet, Europe’s largest ice cap — a vast white desert untouched by human habitation. Overnight aboard.

Day 6: Woodfjorden & Bockfjorden — Arctic Hot Springs

Sail into Woodfjorden and Bockfjorden on Spitsbergen’s north coast. This is a landscape of geological extremes: the Sverrefjellet volcano (extinct for 10,000 years) and the Jotunkjeldene thermal springs, where water at 28°C emerges from the permafrost — yes, you can take a polar plunge in naturally heated water at 80°N. The surrounding tundra supports surprising biodiversity in the brief Arctic summer: purple saxifrage, Svalbard poppies (the world’s northernmost flower), and grazing Svalbard reindeer (a distinct subspecies, short-legged and stocky). Hike across the tundra with your naturalist guides. Overnight aboard.

Day 7: Magdalenefjorden & Gravneset — Whalers & Explorers

Sail into Magdalenefjorden, arguably Svalbard’s most beautiful fjord, surrounded by jagged peaks and glaciers. Land at Gravneset, the site of a 17th-century Dutch whaling station — the blubber ovens (try pots) are still visible on the beach, along with the graves of whalers who died here. The contrast between this industrial history and the pristine Arctic beauty is haunting. The surrounding Waggonway Glacier calves constantly, and your final Zodiac cruise gets you close to the blue ice. Evening: Captain’s farewell dinner, sharing stories of the voyage with your expedition team. Overnight aboard, sailing back toward Isfjorden.

Day 8: Disembark Longyearbyen — Departure

Morning arrival in Longyearbyen. After breakfast, bid farewell to your expedition team. Time permitting, visit the Svalbard Museum — one of the world’s finest Arctic museums, covering the archipelago’s 400-year history of whaling, trapping, mining, and exploration. Transfer to Longyearbyen Airport. You leave the High Arctic with memories of polar bears on the ice, glaciers calving into frozen seas, and a profound appreciation for the most extreme ecosystem on Earth — one that is changing faster than anywhere else on the planet.
