Day 1: Arrival in Niamey — Capital of Niger

Arrive at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital city set along the banks of the Niger River. After clearing immigration, transfer to Bravia Hotel Niamey or similar 4-star accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, take an orientation tour of Niamey’s key landmarks: the National Museum of Niger with its ethnographic collections and small zoo featuring local wildlife, the Grand Mosque, and the historic Centre Culturel Franco-Nigérien. In the late afternoon, visit the Niamey hippo viewing point along the Niger River, where pods of hippos can frequently be seen surfacing and swimming just offshore — an extraordinary wildlife encounter within city limits. Welcome dinner at a restaurant serving Nigerien cuisine including grilled capitaine (Nile perch), rice with peanut sauce, and grilled brochettes. Day 2: Kouré Giraffe Reserve & Transfer to W National Park

After an early breakfast, depart Niamey heading southeast toward W National Park. After approximately 1.5 hours, reach the entrance of Kouré Giraffe Reserve — one of Africa’s most remarkable conservation success stories. Here you’ll meet a local community guide who will help track the West African giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis peralta), a distinct subspecies found nowhere else on Earth. In 1996, only 48 individuals remained, teetering on the brink of extinction. Today, thanks to community-based conservation efforts, over 600 giraffes roam freely through the farmlands and acacia woodlands of the reserve. Track the giraffes on foot, approaching as close as 5 meters — unlike many African animals, giraffes are relaxed around humans at close range, allowing for exceptional photography. After the giraffe tracking, continue the drive south to W National Park (approximately 2 hours). Check into Hotel de la Tapoa, a comfortable safari lodge situated right at the park entrance on the banks of the Tapoa River, surrounded by dense gallery forest. Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive in W National Park

Rise before dawn for the day’s first game drive — the golden hours after sunrise offer the best wildlife viewing as animals are most active before the midday heat. Enter the park with your expert ranger guide and begin searching for the park’s diverse fauna. W National Park protects significant populations of West African mammals including African elephants (approximately 300 individuals), West African lions (critically endangered subspecies), cheetahs, leopards, African buffalo, roan antelope, western hartebeest, warthogs, olive baboons, patas monkeys, and Nile crocodiles. Hippos are abundant in the Niger and Tapoa rivers. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 350 recorded species including African fish eagles, Goliath herons, Abyssinian ground hornbills, and red-throated bee-eaters. Your ranger’s intimate knowledge of the park maximizes wildlife encounters. Break for a picnic lunch at a BBQ site with a raised overlook offering panoramic views across the park to the borders of Burkina Faso and Benin. In the afternoon, visit the park’s waterholes where elephants, buffalo, and antelope gather to drink — watching a herd of elephants bathe and spray themselves from a raised platform is a highlight of any W Park safari. Return to the lodge as the sun sets. Dinner and overnight at Hotel de la Tapoa.

Day 4: Morning Boat Safari & Return to Niamey

Start the day with a morning boat safari on the Tapoa or Niger River (depending on water levels). The river perspective offers entirely different wildlife viewing — hippos in large pods, Nile crocodiles basking on sandbanks, and an extraordinary variety of water birds including herons, egrets, kingfishers, and the prehistoric-looking hammerkop. The riverine forest along the banks is prime monkey habitat, and troops of baboons are frequently seen foraging along the shoreline. After the boat safari, return to the lodge for a late breakfast and check-out. Begin the drive back to Niamey (approximately 3 hours), with a stop en route at a local village market to experience rural life in the Nigerien Sahel. Arrive in Niamey by late afternoon. Check into Bravia Hotel Niamey. For your final evening, visit Niamey’s Grand Marché for souvenir shopping — Tuareg silver jewelry, hand-woven textiles, leather goods, and local spices. Farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Niger River, watching the sun set over West Africa’s third-longest river. Overnight at Bravia Hotel Niamey.

Day 5: Niamey Departure

Enjoy a leisurely final morning in Niamey. After breakfast at the hotel, visit the National Museum’s artisan cooperative workshop (if not visited on Day 1) or take a final stroll along the Niger River. For morning departures, transfer to Diori Hamani International Airport for your onward flight. For afternoon departures, there is the option of a short pirogue (traditional canoe) ride on the Niger River, passing riverside villages and fishermen casting their nets. Transfer to the airport with your souvenirs and safari memories. Your tour concludes.
