Day 4: Swedish Countryside — Småland & Glass Kingdom

The landscape of red wooden houses, deep forests, and mirror-still lakes is the Sweden of the imagination. Visit the Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket) — glassworks where master blowers have practiced their art since the 1740s. Watch molten glass become exquisite objects in studios like Kosta Boda and Orrefors. Overnight in Växjö.
Day 5: Vadstena & Lake Vättern — Medieval Sweden
Morning: Vadstena Castle (1545) on the shores of Lake Vättern, a Renaissance fortress built by Gustav Vasa. The Birgitta Convent (1384), founded by Sweden’s most famous saint, was a center of medieval learning and still houses nuns today. Continue along the Göta Canal — Sweden’s “divorce ditch” (800km of canals dug in the early 1800s, requiring tens of thousands of soldiers — the joke is that it kept them away from their wives for decades). Overnight near Linköping.
Day 6: Stockholm — the Venice of the North
Arrive Stockholm. Full day: Gamla Stan (medieval Old Town), the Royal Palace, and the Vasa Museum — the 17th-century warship that sank 20 minutes into its maiden voyage and was recovered 333 years later, 98% intact. Evening: dinner in Södermalm. Overnight in Stockholm.
Day 7: Stockholm — Archipelago & Culture
Morning: archipelago boat tour — just 30 minutes from the city, the Stockholm archipelago of 30,000 islands begins. Red wooden summer houses, sailboats, and granite skerries create the quintessential Swedish landscape. Afternoon: Skansen open-air museum, the ABBA Museum, or shopping for Swedish design. Day 8: Departure
Morning at leisure in Gamla Stan. Transfer to Arlanda Airport.
