Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Helsinki — Design Capital
Arrive Helsinki. Evening: Senate Square illuminated, Helsinki Cathedral under snow if winter. Finnish sauna experience — Finland has 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people, and no trip is complete without the löyly (sauna steam). Overnight in Helsinki.
Day 2: Helsinki — Temppeliaukio & Design District
Morning: Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) — blasted into solid granite, with raw rock walls and a copper dome creating near-perfect acoustics. The Design District for Marimekko, Iittala, and Artek. Afternoon flight to Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland. Overnight in Rovaniemi.
Day 3: Rovaniemi — Santa Claus Village & Arctic Circle
Morning: Santa Claus Village — cross the Arctic Circle line, meet Santa in his office (he’s in year-round), and send postcards from Santa’s Post Office with a special Arctic Circle postmark. The village is touristy and utterly magical. Afternoon: husky safari — a team of eager huskies pulls your sled through snow-covered forests, the only sound being their breathing and the runners on snow. Evening: Northern Lights hunt by snowmobile — drive into the Arctic wilderness, stop on a frozen lake, and watch the Aurora Borealis dance green and purple across the sky (weather dependent, but the experience of driving a snowmobile under Arctic stars is worth it regardless). Overnight in Rovaniemi.
Day 4: Lapland — Reindeer & Ice Hotel
Morning: reindeer farm visit — learn about Sámi reindeer herding culture, take a reindeer sleigh ride (slower than huskies, but pure winter magic), and receive your official reindeer driver’s license. Afternoon: visit the Arktikum Museum — a striking glass-tube building that tells the story of Arctic life, Sámi culture, and Lapland’s harsh beauty. Optional: stay overnight in a glass igloo — heated glass roof for Northern Lights viewing from bed. Overnight in Rovaniemi.
Day 5: Lapland Activities — Ice Fishing & Snowshoeing
Morning: ice fishing on a frozen lake — drill through meter-thick ice, drop a line, and wait in the profound silence of the Arctic winter. The catch (perch, pike) is cooked over an open fire for lunch. Afternoon: snowshoe trek through snow-covered forest — quiet, slow, magical — followed by a traditional Finnish sauna. Evening: farewell dinner of reindeer stew (poronkäristys) with lingonberry jam and mashed potatoes. Overnight in Rovaniemi.
