Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Port Moresby & Fly to Mount Hagen
Arrive POM. Day 2: fly to Mount Hagen. Afternoon visit to a Huli wigmen village. Overnight at Rondon Ridge, a luxury lodge overlooking the Wahgi Valley.
Day 3-4: Mount Hagen — Huli & Melpa Cultures
Two days exploring Western Highlands cultures. Meet Huli wigmen and Melpa elders. Visit coffee plantations and a traditional market where highland tribes trade. Spectacular views from Rondon Ridge at 2,100m. Overnight at Rondon Ridge.
Day 5-6: Tari — Southern Highlands
Fly to Tari. Check into Ambua Lodge, deep in the Southern Highlands rainforest. Two days immersed in Huli culture — visit wig-making schools, attend spirit dances, and walk the stunning highland trails. Birds of paradise in the lodge gardens. Overnight at Ambua Lodge.
Day 7: Asaro Mudmen & Goroka
Drive through the highlands to Goroka. En route, visit Asaro Mudmen at their village. Private performance of the mudman legend. Afternoon at J.K. McCarthy Museum. Overnight in Goroka.
Day 8: Sepik River — Spirit Houses
Fly to the Sepik River region. Boat journey along one of the world’s great rivers to visit a traditional village with its Haus Tambaran (spirit house) — towering structures with elaborate carved facades representing ancestral spirits. See master carvers at work. Overnight at Karawari Lodge.
Day 9: Sepik Culture & Return to POM
Morning village visit and crocodile ceremony (depending on season). The Sepik people’s relationship with crocodiles is central to their culture. Afternoon flight to POM. Farewell dinner.
Day 10: Depart PNG
Transfer to airport.
