Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Senaru — Sembalun Village (Registration & Transfer)
Arrive in Lombok and transfer to Sembalun Lawang village (1,156m), the gateway on the eastern side of Rinjani. The Rinjani National Park covers 41,330 hectares and includes the mountain and the Segara Anak crater lake. The volcano last erupted in 2016, creating a new cone (Gunung Barujari) within the crater. Afternoon: gear check, briefing with your guide and porter team, and a short acclimatization walk through the Sembalun valley — a high-altitude plain surrounded by mountains where garlic and potatoes grow in the volcanic soil. Overnight in Sembalun guesthouse with dinner.
Day 2: Sembalun to Crater Rim — The Ascent
An early start after breakfast, registering at the Rinjani Trek Center (7 AM). The trail climbs through open savannah grasslands with sparse trees — the landscape here feels more like Africa than tropical Indonesia. The gradient is gentle but relentless over 7km (3-4 hours) to Pos 3 (Pada Balong, 1,800m). Lunch break. After Pos 3, the trail steepens significantly, climbing through pine-like casuarina forest and volcanic scree. The final push to the crater rim (Plawangan Sembalun, 2,639m) takes 3 hours from Pos 3 — this is the most challenging section but the reward is extraordinary. Arrive at the crater rim camp as sunset approaches. The view across Segara Anak (the 8.5km-wide crater lake, 2,000m elevation) with the active Gunung Barujari cone smoking in the center, and Mount Rinjani’s summit pyramid on the far side, is one of Indonesia’s most magnificent panoramas. Overnight camping on the crater rim.
Day 3: Summit Assault & Descent to Crater Lake
2:00 AM wake-up for the summit assault. The trail from the rim to the summit (3,726m) is 3.5km but gains 1,087m of elevation — climbing steeply over volcanic scree and loose rock where every three steps forward means sliding one step back. This is physically demanding but achievable with determination. Reach the summit just before sunrise (about 5:30 AM). The 360-degree panorama is indescribable: the entire island of Lombok, the Gili Islands, Mount Agung in Bali across the sea, and the smoking crater far below. Morning light on the volcanic landscape reveals colors that seem impossible — sulfurous yellows, oxidized reds, and the deep turquoise of Segara Anak. Descend to camp for breakfast and rest. After descending from the rim camp, continue down into the crater to Segara Anak (2,000m). The trail drops steeply (about 600m in 2km). At the lakeshore, soak in the natural hot springs (Aik Kalak) — the sulfur-rich water, heated by the volcano to about 40°C, is the perfect remedy for tired muscles. The springs bubble up directly from volcanic vents into pools built into the rock. Camp overnight beside the crater lake.
Day 4: Crater Lake to Senaru — Exit Through the Rainforest
A more relaxed start after the previous day’s exertion. Morning: explore the crater lake area — the waters of Segara Anak are considered sacred by both the Hindu Balinese and Muslim Sasak people, who make pilgrimages here to perform ceremonies. The lake is home to a unique group of freshwater fish. The ascent out of the crater to the Senaru rim (Plawangan Senaru, 2,641m) takes about 2 hours. From the Senaru rim, the view is from the opposite side, showing the summit pyramid where you stood the day before. The descent on the Senaru side is through dense tropical rainforest — a completely different ecosystem from the dry eastern slope. Tall trees, hanging moss, ferns, and orchids line the trail. Black ebony leaf monkeys (lutung) are often seen in the canopy. Arrive at Senaru village (601m) by mid-afternoon. Transfer back to your accommodation or airport. Celebrate your achievement — you’ve conquered Indonesia’s most beautiful volcano.
