Malawi may be one of Africa’s smallest countries, but it packs an extraordinary punch: the “Warm Heart of Africa” combines genuine Big Five safari experiences with Lake Malawi, a UNESCO-listed freshwater sea spanning 29,600 km² that’s home to more fish species than any other lake on Earth. This 7-day journey pairs two of Malawi’s best wildlife reserves — Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve — with the golden beaches and crystal waters of the lake, creating a safari-beach combination that rivals any in Africa, without the crowds.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lilongwe — Transfer to Liwonde National Park
Land at Lilongwe International Airport (LLW), where your safari guide meets you. After a briefing, set off on a scenic 5-hour drive south to Liwonde National Park, along the Shire River. This park has undergone a remarkable transformation under African Parks management — elephant populations have soared, cheetahs were reintroduced, and the predator-prey balance has been restored. Arrive at Mvuu Camp or similar and settle in. Late afternoon game drive through the floodplains and mopane woodlands — expect elephants, hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck, and over 400 bird species. Dinner and overnight at your lodge in Liwonde.

Day 2: Liwonde — Game Drive & Shire River Boat Safari
Early morning game drive through the park’s open plains and riverine forests. Liwonde is particularly known for its elephant herds — you may encounter 50 or more elephants drinking at the river’s edge. Keep watch for sable antelope, buffalo, and the park’s growing lion population. After lunch, embark on a Shire River boat safari — one of Africa’s finest river experiences. Glide past pods of hippos (the Shire has one of the highest hippo densities in Africa), massive crocodiles sunning on sandbanks, and fish eagles diving for their prey. The birdlife is extraordinary — herons, kingfishers, and the elusive Pel’s fishing owl. Sundowner drinks on the river. Overnight at your lodge.

Day 3: Transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve — Big Five Country
After breakfast, drive approximately 4 hours south to Majete Wildlife Reserve in the Lower Shire Valley. Covering 700 km², Majete is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. In 2003, the reserve was virtually empty of wildlife. Today, thanks to African Parks, it’s a thriving Big Five destination with lions, leopards, elephants, black rhinos, and buffalo — plus giraffes, elands, zebras, and more. Arrive at Thawale Lodge or similar. Late afternoon game drive to explore the reserve’s diverse habitats — riverine thickets, rocky hills, and woodland. Dinner and overnight inside Majete.

Day 4: Majete — Full Day Safari & Walking Safari
Full day of safari activities in Majete. Morning game drive to explore the more remote sections of the reserve — keep watch for leopards draped over acacia branches, and black rhinos in the thickets. Return to camp for lunch and a siesta. In the late afternoon, experience a guided walking safari with an armed scout — learn to read animal tracks, identify birdsong, and understand the smaller wonders of the bush (dung beetles, termite mounds, medicinal plants). This is safari at ground level — intimate, educational, and thrilling. Optional evening cultural visit to a nearby village to meet local communities. Overnight at your lodge in Majete.

Day 5: Majete to Lake Malawi — Cape Maclear
After a final morning activity in Majete (optional short game drive or nature walk), depart east toward Lake Malawi. The 3-4 hour drive descends from the Shire Highlands to the lake’s southern shores, arriving in the Cape Maclear / Monkey Bay area. Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa, is Africa’s third-largest lake — so vast it’s often called the “Calendar Lake” (365 miles long, 52 miles wide). Check into your lakeside lodge — The Makokola Retreat, Pumulani Lodge, or a similar beachfront property. Afternoon at leisure: swim, kayak, or simply relax on the golden sand beach. Overnight by Lake Malawi.

Day 6: Lake Malawi — Snorkeling & Island Visit
A full day to enjoy Lake Malawi’s aquatic wonders. Morning snorkeling excursion — the lake’s crystal-clear waters host over 1,000 species of cichlid fish, 90% of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The fish are extraordinarily colorful and curious, making snorkeling feel like floating through a living aquarium. Optional kayak to a nearby island, or a glass-bottom boat ride. Visit a local fishing village to see traditional dugout canoe building. Afternoon at leisure — try stand-up paddleboarding, walk the beach, or hike to viewpoints over the lake. Farewell dinner featuring chambo (the local tilapia), fresh from the lake. Overnight by Lake Malawi.

Day 7: Return to Lilongwe — Departure
After breakfast, begin the 4-hour return drive to Lilongwe International Airport. Depending on flight time, stop at the Dedza Pottery workshop to purchase distinctive ceramic pieces made by local artisans. Arrive at the airport for your onward flight, carrying memories of elephants at the river’s edge, the thrill of walking through the African bush, and the serenity of Lake Malawi’s golden shores.
