Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Blantyre
Welcome to Malawi! Transfer from Chileka Airport to your lodge in the Thyolo tea-growing highlands. Afternoon walk through the Satemwa Tea Estate — rolling hills of emerald tea bushes, learn the art of tea tasting from a master blender. Sundowner overlooking the Shire Highlands. Overnight at a tea estate lodge.
Day 2: Majete Wildlife Reserve
Morning transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve — one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories. In 2003, Majete had zero elephants; today it’s a thriving Big Five reserve with over 400 elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and black rhinos. Full day game drive through miombo woodlands and along the Shire River. Overnight at a bush camp in Majete.
Day 3: Majete to Liwonde National Park
Morning game drive in Majete — last chance for the elusive black rhino. Drive north to Liwonde National Park, Malawi’s premier wildlife destination. Liwonde is famous for its massive elephant population, hippos, and the reintroduced cheetahs and lions. Afternoon boat safari on the Shire River — the best way to see elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. Overnight at a riverfront lodge.
Day 4: Liwonde Full Day Safari
Full day in Liwonde. Dawn game drive through floodplains and palm groves — spot sable antelopes, Lichtenstein’s hartebeests, and the park’s recent predator reintroductions. Bush breakfast. Afternoon walking safari along the river. Sunset boat cruise — the Shire at dusk is magical, with fish eagles calling and elephants silhouetted against the red sky. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Lake Malawi — Cape Maclear
Drive north to Lake Malawi, the ninth-largest lake in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Arrive at Cape Maclear on the southern shore — golden sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and granite boulders that make this one of Africa’s most beautiful freshwater settings. Afternoon kayaking around the rocky islands. Overnight at a beachfront lodge.
Day 6: Lake Malawi — Mumbo Island
Boat trip to Mumbo Island, an uninhabited granite island with one of Lake Malawi’s most pristine ecosystems. Snorkel in the world’s first freshwater national park — Lake Malawi contains more fish species than any other lake on Earth, with over 1,000 species of colorful cichlids. Kayak around the island, hike to the viewpoint. Beach barbecue lunch. Overnight at Cape Maclear.
Day 7: Lake Malawi Leisure Day
Full day at leisure in paradise. Options: scuba diving among cichlids, sailing a traditional dhow, village visit to Chembe, hiking in Lake Malawi National Park, or simply reading in a hammock between coconut palms. Evening farewell dinner with fresh chambo (Lake Malawi tilapia) grilled on the beach. Overnight at Cape Maclear.
Day 8: Depart Lilongwe
Morning swim in the lake. Drive to Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. Visit the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre — an urban wildlife sanctuary. Transfer to Kamuzu International Airport. Zikomo — thank you, Malawi!
